Early on in her career, she was often labeled “the most beautiful woman in the world.” This might have played havoc with the mind of a lesser mortal; for Brigitte Bardot, forever typecast as the blonde bombshell, it was all in a day’s work. Throughout her illustrious career, she acted in 47 films, performed in several musicals, and recorded more than 60 songs. She became a muse for the likes of Christian Dior, Pierre Balmain, and Pierre Cardin. And she was awarded the Legion of Honour, France’s highest decoration, in 1985, ten years after retiring at age 40 to pursue a “more meaningful life” out of the withering glare of the press, when she could have continued to shine on the silver screen.

Bardot appears to be having a major moment in 2025. Sabrina Carpenter’s new Vogue Italia cover shoot, shot by fashion photographer Steven Meisel, was clearly influenced by the legendary actress’s ’60s-era glamour. And two new art books pay tribute to her considerable legacy. Being Bardot, published by ACC Art Books, features photography by Douglas Kirkland and Terry O’Neill, who took some of the most iconic images of the actress ever captured on film; while Brigitte Bardot: Intimate, from Assouline, showcases never-before-published photos by her longtime friend Glislain “Jicky” Dussart. All still utterly enthralling nearly six decades later.

“In a period of just a little more than 20 years, Brigitte Bardot exploded established perceptions of beauty and femininity,” writes author James Clarke in the introduction to Being Bardot. “In doing so, she dramatically rewrote expectations around—and perhaps even established a new version of—femininity. She was a movie star and a pop-culture icon whose image was emblematic of a particular moment in time. Bardot’s film career spanned 21 years, from 1951 to 1973. Her screen performances, and the still images of her that became such a constant and vivid element of popular culture, brought a new sense of what female movie stardom could be, not only in French cinema but globally.”

Bardot’s killer looks and knockout style have been emulated by the likes of Claudia Schiffer, Kate Moss, Lara Stone, Amy Winehouse, Georgia May Jagger, Scarlett Johansson, and Paris Hilton. Asked about her many imitators, Bardot simply sniffed, ”None have my personality.” She put Saint-Tropez on the map after filming And God Created Woman there in 1953, directed by her husband Roger Vadim, establishing such a strong connection with the Mediterranean paradise that she lives there to this day, having made it her permanent home; many of Dussart’s photographs were taken there.

Terry O’Neill created one of the most iconic images ever taken of Bardot, a photograph of her smoking a cigarette on the set of The Legend of Frenchie King in 1971.”I thought if I could get a close-up of the moment the wind blew her trademark hair into her eyes, combined with the cigarette dangling from those lips, it would capture how sexy, strong and wild her image was,” O’Neill recalls in Being Bardot. “I didn’t have many frames left, so I went in closer. The wind blew, and I clicked the shutter. I had no idea if the photo would match the image I had in my mind until the film was developed. The first time I saw these images, I got chills.” It’s safe to say that the rest of the world did, too.

On the occasion of her 90th birthday, the town of Villefranchesur-Mer, another picturesque French Riviera town she elevated to icon status, honored Bardot with a celebratory photo exhibition. “The images show her sometimes bursting with joy, sometimes introspective, but always imbued with this aura which has fascinated and still fascinates entire generations,” the exhibition noted. “Bardot’s authenticity is one of the most striking to people. Even though she was a global star, she always stayed true to who she was and did not yield to the expectations of others.”

From the very start of her career, the curators wrote, “from Paris to Saint-Tropez and via Villefranche-sur-Mer, all along her path to fame, from one film to the next, Brigitte had all the makings of a celebrity: Whether copied, scrutinized, followed, persecuted or adored, she made one successful film after another based on her sex appeal, in which she often plays a young French woman who is portrayed as wild, suave, and beautiful. Often the object—and victim— of a malicious curiosity, on screen she is revealed as a true, uninhibited and moving actress. Bardot irritated and amused her contemporaries all the more by her blatant disregard of public opinion and lack of approval of known critiques.”

The cover of “Brigitte Bardot: Intimate” (Assouline)

Her impact on cinema, fashion, and culture cannot be overstated, all the more so because she decided to turn her back on it and devote herself to a cause close to her heart; in 1986, she founded the Fondation Brigitte Bardot to protect wild and domesticated animals. Beyond simply becoming famous, she radically altered the whole concept of female stardom. And she continues to influence and inspire generations of actresses, models, and women from all walks of life. Vive Bardot.

Pop superstar Sabrina Carpenter is entering her full bombshell era, gracing the October cover of Vogue Italia with a stunning shoot that blends retro glamour with her signature playful edge. The cover, lensed by legendary fashion photographer Steven Meisel and styled by Karl Templer, shows the “Man’s Best Friend” singer in a sophisticated yet sultry light, featuring a flipped-out bob and dramatic makeup.

Carpenter’s latest photo shoot captures the 26-year-old at a pivotal moment in her white-hot career, fresh off the chart-topping success of her new album and a recently announced headlining slot at Coachella. The striking black-and-white photos cast Carpenter in a mix of nostalgic looks, including pieces from Prada and Dolce & Gabbana, styled with an air of Brigitte Bardot-like sophistication.

Celebrity commenters praising the shoot on Carpenter’s Instagram page included actress Maude Apatow (“Oh my god”), supermodel Winnie Harlow (“Stunner”) and former Boy Meets World actress and Maxim cover star Danielle Fishel (“Literally took my breath away!! You’re stunning in every way”).

In the shoot’s accompanying interview, Carpenter spoke candidly about her use of wit and irony as both a defense mechanism and a source of creative freedom. She noted that her femininity is not a mask but “an experiment, a shifting character I can write and rewrite every day.” She also reflected on the unique connection with her fanbase, stating, “The most important part of the last 10 years of my life have been the people that have got me to where I am. We really are growing up together.”

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival has unveiled its headliners for 2026, with Sabrina Carpenter, Justin Bieber, and Karol G set to top the bill during two weekends in April. The massive annual music festival will take place at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, on April 10-12 and April 17-19.

The lineup, shared on the official festival poster, features dozens of genre-spanning acts, including Young Thug, The xx, Turnstile, The Strokes, David Byrne, FKA Twigs, Addison Rae, Wet Leg, Clipse, Ethel Cain, and many more. Also slated to perform are Alex G, PinkPantheress, Iggy Pop, Givēon, Little Simz, Devo, Blood Orange, Geese, Dijon, Oklou, Black Flag, Disclosure, Sexyy Red, Katseye, Moby, Joyce Manor, Lykke Li, CMAT, Wednesday, Model/Actriz, Ceremony, Bedouin, The Chats, Lambrini Girls, Fakemink, Jane Remover, Drain, and the Rapture. The poster also curiously lists “The Bunker Debut of Radiohead Kid A Mnesia.”

For Carpenter, the headlining spot marks a significant promotion after her festival debut in 2024. The move follows the success of her recent albums, Short n’ Sweet and Man’s Best Friend. She is also scheduled for a string of residencies and South American festival appearances leading up to Coachella.

Bieber’s performance will be his first-ever headlining set at the festival. While former Maxim cover star Hailey Bieber’s husband has made four guest appearances with other artists, this will be his first time as a billed performer. It will also be his first live concert in more than three years, with his last show in September 2022. Bieber’s set will support his recent albums, Swag and Swag II.

Karol G will also return to Coachella after her 2022 debut. The Colombian superstar is set to perform her first full live show behind her latest album, Tropicoqueta, which was released in June. Last year’s Coachella festival was headlined by Lady Gaga, Green Day, Post Malone, and Travis Scott.

Passes for the festival will go on sale on September 19 at 1 p.m. Eastern. Check out the full 2026 lineup in the poster above.

Sabrina Carpenter Toasts ‘Man’s Best Friend’ With Johnnie Walker Partnership https://www.maxim.com/food-drink/sabrina-carpenter-toasts-mans-best-friend-with-johnnie-walker-partnership/ Fri, 29 Aug 2025 19:38:28 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=270293
(Johnnie Walker)

Goodbye “Espresso,” hello Scotch: Sabrina Carpenter is celebrating the release of her new album with help from Johnnie Walker. The two-time Grammy winner and the Scotch whisky label announced a multi-year partnership tied to the release of Carpenter’s seventh studio album, Man’s Best Friend.

Billed as “the first verse of Johnnie Walker’s plans to collaborate with progressive voices in music,” the collab will bring Carpenter’s takes the Manhattan, whisky sour and whisky highball at select stops on the final leg of her Short n’ Sweet Tour, as well as more Johnnie Walker content inspired by Man’s Best Friend.

“Stepping into this next chapter of my music has been such a thrill,” Carpenter said. “It feels more confident and a lot more unapologetic. This partnership is about celebrating boldly, pushing boundaries, and moving forward with purpose.”

(Johnnie Walker)

“Johnnie Walker has evolved through generations to become the modern icon it is today, and Sabrina is on a similar path with Man’s Best Friend, stepping into a more confident, self-assured chapter while keeping her signature charm,” added JJ Stratford, who created the visuals for the campaign, as well as the “Don’t Worry I’ll Make You Worry” and “We Almost Broke Up Again Last Night” lyric videos. “In developing this campaign, we nodded to the golden age of spirits advertising, then layered in Sabrina’s bold yet timeless aesthetic, clever humor and a modern wink to make it unmistakably her own.”

(Johnnie Walker)

Carpenter’s tongue-in-cheek wit pervades Man’s Best Friend, particularly the latest single. Though the new track is titled “Tears,” the pop superstar is anything but sad as she describes in NSFW detail what she loves about a “responsible guy.”

The music video, which dropped simultaneously with the the album, opens with Carpenter crawling away from a car wreck towards a seemingly desolate house while donning a retro Robin egg blue skirt suit, white gloves and a matching sun hat. Naturally, the items are quickly shed to reveal the lingerie set the singer dons while navigating the spooky abode via disco moves and pole dancing.

“The album is not for any pearl clutchers,” Carpenter told CBS News, warning prudes against giving Man’s Best Friend a listen. “But I also think that even pearl clutchers can listen to an album like that in their own solitude and find something that makes them smirk and chuckle to themselves.”

“Sometimes people hear the lyrics that are really bold and they go, ‘I don’t want to sing this in front of other people,'” Carpenter added. “It’s almost… TMI. But I think about being at a concert, with however many young women I see in the front row that are screaming at the top of their lungs with their best friends and you can go like, we can all sigh of relief.”

Sabrina Carpenter Rocks Denim Microshorts In Video For New Single ‘Manchild’ https://www.maxim.com/entertainment/sabrina-carpenter-rocks-microshorts-in-music-video-for-new-single-manchild/ Wed, 04 Jun 2025 09:48:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=261549

Sabrina Carpenter captured the internet’s attention via a cryptic video that left many questions and few answers. The simple, 16-second snippet featured the “Espresso” superstar donning denim microshorts, a white crop top, and a platinum blonde hairdo while hitchhiking in a desert. The only dialogue came at the very end, as Carpenter’s overdubbed voice quietly giggled and said, “Oh, boy.”

The clip turned out to be a teaser for the social media-wide announcement of her upcoming single, dubbed “Manchild,” which drops on June 5 at 8 p.m. EST. It’s expected that Carpenter will debut the song live during her festival appearance at Primavera Sound in Barcelona on June 6, a la her performance of “Espresso” at Coachella last year.

“This one’s about you!!” she in an X post revealing the track, also adding that a 7-inch vinyl record is available to purchase now. Following that link reveals that the song was produced by Jack Antonoff, who’s also worked with Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar, Pink, Lorde and Lana Del Rey. The B-side also apparently contains a second track with an emo-length title, “Inside of your head when you’ve just won an argument with a man.”

As Variety notes, this will be Carpenter’s first release following the success of “Short n’ Sweet,” which debuted at No. 1 in September, and its recent deluxe reissue that included such bonus songs as “Please Please Please (feat. Dolly Parton),” 15 Minutes,” “Couldn’t Make It Any Harder,” “Busy Woman” and “Bad Reviews.” Watch the original “Manchild” teaser that got everyone talking below.

‘White Lotus’ Star Lisa Manobal’s ‘Rosa Parks’ Louis Vuitton Lingerie Stirs Met Gala Controversy https://www.maxim.com/entertainment/white-lotus-star-lisa-manobals-rosa-parks-louis-vuitton-lingerie-stirs-met-gala-controversy/ Thu, 08 May 2025 09:02:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=258933
(Theo Wargo/FilmMagic)

A case of misidentification created a controversy that’s bizarre even by Met Gala standards. A Louis Vuitton look donned by Thai K-pop star Lisa Manobal, whose global profile reached new heights following her role in The White Lotus Season 3, came under intense scrutiny when internet commenters thought they spotted Rosa Parks’ visage collaged onto the crotch of her bodysuit.

According to a representative for artist Henry Taylor, who collaborated on the design with LV creative director Pharrell Williams, those internet commenters are wrong.

“The figure featured in Lisa’s Louis Vuitton look is not Rosa Parks, but one of Henry’s neighbors,” the rep said in a statement to Vulture. “The faces seen on this look, as well as on previous LV garments featuring Taylor’s artwork, are all drawn from his personal life—family members, friends, and neighbors. These figures come directly from Henry’s existing artworks, which he provided to LVMH for Pharrell’s debut collection with Louis Vuitton in 2023. None of the individuals depicted in any of the garments are Rosa Parks or other well-known figures from Black cultural history. They are all people from Henry’s own life.”

The mistaken ID is somewhat forgivable, given that it would also have fit the Met Gala’s “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” theme celebrating Black dandyism. Among the night’s many strikingly celebrity outfits included musician-turned-billionaire lingerie mogul Rihanna’s black floor-length skirt and cropped black jacket by Marc Jacobs, former Maxim cover star Teyana Taylor’s pinstripe suit and “Harlem rose”-embroidered cape by Black Panther costume designer Ruth. E Carter, actress Zendaya’s Williams-designed three-piece white suit, and pop star Sabrina Carpenter’s pantless Louis Vuitton bodysuit. Check them out below:

Under Her Skims: How Kim Kardashian Created A Shapewear Empire https://www.maxim.com/style/under-her-skims-how-kim-kardashian-created-a-shapewear-empire/ Mon, 17 Feb 2025 11:49:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=251732
(Skims)

In mid-November, Kim Kardashian’s Skims tried on high fashion for size when the ever-exploding shapewear brand announced a partnership with luxe Italian label Dolce & Gabbana. The expansive ensuing collection reimagined D&G’s classic silhouettes and signature leopard print as accessible but sexy “solutions for everyone” per the Skims motto, from barely there mesh bralettes and feline-spotted slip dresses to luscious silk robes and satin thongs. The crossover capsule proved wildly popular, with more than $3 million in revenue generated in the first 48 hours—even after the fashion house’s website crashed.

One might be tempted to chalk up the server-smashing success to sheer star power—Kim and her wildly famous sister, Kourtney Kardashian Barker, flaunted their famed curves as they tag-teamed an old world–themed campaign celebrating Italian culture and women. But that temptation would be short-sighted, as Skims is a paragon of stratospheric success, especially in the realm of celebrity-backed brands. The venture, which was co-founded by Kardashian, CEO Jens Grede and Chief Product Officer Emma Grede in 2018, had reached a self-reported valuation of $1.6 billion by 2021, the same year Kardashian first joined the Forbes World’s Billionaires list. Today, the financial outlet reports that the famous founder’s stake in the now-$4 billion company accounts for the lion’s share of her $1.7 billion net worth. While Kardashian’s life as a reality TV star and enterprising influencer brought millions, her Skims entrepreneurship yielded a fortune that’s counted among the world’s richest.

And there’s no slowdown in sight. Rumors of an IPO are swirling, and in 2024, Skims opened its first five brick-and-mortar stores in Houston, Austin, Atlanta, the Miami metro’s Aventura suburb and Washington D.C.’s Georgetown neighborhood. After the imminent launch of a 5,000-squarefoot flagship spot in West Hollywood, more openings in stateside cities and international markets are sure to follow as the founders chase a lofty goal: “Kim and I can envision a future where years from today there’s a Skims store anywhere in the world you’d find an Apple store or a Nike store,” Jen Grede said in an interview with Bloomberg last year.

Wild ambition aside, the executives have clearly hit a stride with their current strategy, a large part of which involves enlisting a parade of the world’s hottest celebrities to model new Skims collections. A couple of weeks before the late-August release of Sabrina Carpenter’s first Billboard chart-topping album, Short n’ Sweet, the singer-songwriter sensation turned heads with a particularly sultry Skims campaign that sought to channel ’90s “nostalgia in all its glory,” the brand said in a statement. More recently, burgeoning Canadian pop star Tate McRae was featured in a holiday-themed campaign lensed by filmmaker and photographer Harmony Korine, who playfully captures looks punctuated by red lingerie and faux fur boots. “Tate McRae was the perfect fit. She’s captivating, beautiful and truly of the moment,” Kardashian said, emphasizing the timely casting decision.

Skims’ creative department, headed by Kardashian, has a knack for leveraging those moments. The brand helped put a bow on Charli XCX’s viral “Brat Summer” by further elevating the electropop sensation in a soaking-wet campaign. Star photographer Petra Collins brilliantly showcased the drenched “360” singer’s beauty in the brand’s bralettes, boxers and ribbed tanks, right as her acclaimed Brat album was having a moment with Gen Z. But as a brand founded on inclusive and body-positive principals, Skims’ noblest moment came during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, when TV host, actress and multitime Maxim cover girl Olivia Munn bravely showed off her mastectomy scar before modeling the viral new “Nipple Bra.” At this rate, we’ll be asking who hasn’t modeled for Skims by this time next year.

Sabrina Carpenter Sizzles In SKIMS Campaign, Talks Taylor Swift Friendship https://www.maxim.com/entertainment/sabrina-carpenter-sizzles-in-skims-campaign-talks-taylor-swift-friendship/ Fri, 09 Aug 2024 09:00:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=239395
(SKIMS)

Sabrina Carpenter isn’t just heating up the charts, she’s also turning heads in a SKIMS campaign that continues to garner buzz following its spring release.

(SKIMS)

The “Espresso” singer, 25, is the latest celeb to don eye-catching lingerie and shapewear from Kim Kardashian’s company, joining the likes of Lana Del Rey and Cardi B. SKIMS also continues to make waves, and recently topped a QR Code Generator study examining the top celebrity clothing brands in the world.

(SKIMS)

The hitmaker also turned heads in a recent Variety interview. Carpenter, a good friend of Taylor Swift who has served as the megastar’s opening act, said the SKIMS campaign wasn’t a sticking point in their friendship, despite Swift’s long-running feud with Kim Kardashian. “The posts about me having to ‘ask for her permission’—no. She’s one of my best, best friends, and we grab dinner or text and catch up like you would with your best friend,” Carpenter told Variety.

(SKIMS)

The campaign has proven a hit for Carpenter in its own right, famous celeb associations notwithstanding. Shot by British photographer Jack Bridgland, the cheeky campaign seeks to “capture ‘90s nostalgia in all its glory,” SKIMS noted, showcasing the sultry Carpenter “against the backdrop of a quintessentially ‘90s home filled with fan posters and stacks of CDs.”

(SKIMS)

Carpenter spotlights the SKIMS Stretch Lace and Fits Everybody collections, and the brand rightly notes that “Carpenter’s captivating aesthetic adds to the timeless charm of nostalgia” across the entire offering. ““SKIMS has so many beautiful underwear styles that I was so excited to wear,” Carpenter said. I love both collections, especially the delicacy of the Stretch Lace and the second-skin feel of Fits Everybody. Every piece I wore was super flattering and so comfortable, which of course is always a given with SKIMS.”

Kim Kardashian herself added that Carpenter “is not only a very talented musician, but she also has a fashion sense and an ‘it’ factor that really resonates with the next generation,” something apparent at the singer’s buzzed-about Coachella debut and chart-topping turn in recent weeks. From centerstage to the center of a buzzed-about photoshoot, Carpenter (and SKIMS) are assuredly here to stay.
