When Kevin Plank, the assured founder of sports apparel powerhouse Under Armour, set his sights on whiskey back in 2012, it wasn’t just another bold business move—rather it was a love letter to his home state’s long forgotten rye heritage. Plank, along with partner Bill McDermott, wanted to invest in Maryland in a way that resonated with the region’s past. Their inspiration? The limestone-rich spring at Sagamore Farm, a thoroughbred horse racing estate Plank had purchased in 2007.

That spring water—long prized in whiskey-making—sparked research that led them to uncover Maryland’s once-booming rye industry. Before Prohibition, more than 40 distilleries thrived in the state, their spicy, full-bodied ryes renowned across the country. By the 1970s, they were all gone, casualties of war, changing tastes (aka the infamous whiskey crash) and consolidation. So Plank and McDermott saw a chance to resurrect rye in Charm City with Sagamore Spirits.

The early days were about building a foundation. While they steadied themselves, and built their distillery in Baltimore’s Port Covington neighborhood, Sagamore Spirit initially sourced whiskey from Indiana’s MGP. One of the largest rye producers in America, renowned for their 95% rye / 5% malted barley mash bill, MGP’s recipe built labels like Templeton, Bulleit, High West and Redemption, while also being used by the likes of Angel’s Envy, Smooth Ambler, George Dickel and more. 

From the beginning, however, one of the ways Sagamore distinguished itself was utilizing a unique mash bill philosophy. Instead of leaning solely on MGP’s now-classic “high-rye” 95% rye, Sagamore uses two recipes—adding a “low rye” (52% rye, 43% corn, 5% malted barley) to the mix. By blending this other rye that hovers close to a bourbon in its high-corn grain bill, Sagamore creates a whiskey with rye’s spice but also a softer, sweeter profile. “We’re trying to educate the consumer,” Ryan Norwood, the brand’s Vice President of Operations, tells Maxim. “At the same time we’re trying to bring bourbon drinkers into rye.”

Those barrels gave the fledgling brand a foundation while their own Baltimore distillery took shape. In 2017, steel and copper finally met in Sagamore’s Patapsco River waterfront home, and the brand began laying down its own whiskey—mostly replicas of those twin MGP high- and low-rye whiskeys which built the Sagamore name. But the team made a deliberate choice: instead of flipping a switch, they slowly transitioned, blending their own whiskey into the MGP juice until Sagamore’s flagship Small Batch and Cask Strength expressions were fully Maryland-made—an achievement the former only achieved last year, and latter earlier this year.

That approach comes to full expression in Sagamore’s latest Reserve Series release: a 10-Year Rye, bottled at just over 110 proof (55.4% ABV). Made from some of the earliest MGP stock Sagamore ever purchased, the whiskey is both a farewell and a milestone—one of the last sourced barrels before the brand fully transitions to its own distillate. For Norwood, it’s a fitting capstone: “For me, rye kind of has that sweet spot between about six and ten years.”

Despite being sourced from Indiana, Maryland’s climate leaves its own fingerprint on the spirit. With humid summers and frigid winters, the state’s seasonal swings push whiskey deep into the oak barrels’ wood and back again, extracting flavor in bold strokes. Unlike Kentucky or Indiana, Norwood reveals Sagamore’s rickhouses often see proof rise during maturation, adding another layer of character. The result in the 10-Year is a whiskey the VP describes as “super balanced… with notes of peach crumble, roasted nuts, rye spice, with just enough sweetness to round it out.”

The 10-Year release is limited, and rye aficionados will likely snap it up for its SRP of $80. But for Sagamore it’s less about chasing hype than telling a story—about water and wood, about Maryland’s forgotten past, and about a decade-long gamble slowly paying off. Beyond being Sagamore Spirits oldest rye to date, the newest addition to its award-winning Reserve Series is also both an ending and a beginning, a tribute to the barrels that carried them this far, and a promise of what’s to come as more of their whiskey carries the unmistakable mark of Baltimore.

If you know nothing about Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, you can still look at the world’s biggest action star and make one solid conclusion: Dude knows his way around the gym. 

The Rock IS the gym. It’s his Iron Paradise. He recently did a swole-tastic Under Armour/JBL headphones photo shoot in that paradise, and in the process he demonstrated how he stays so jacked. It’s motivation, sure, but it’s also all about technique. And the name of his game here for a grueling chest workout is “drop sets.”

As an internal Maxim editorial discussion revealed, plenty of meatheads and proto-meatheads know what the drop set is and how to use it, but it’s not necessarily standard knowledge for gym newbies striving for those gains. 

The Rock demonstrated in mere seconds how it’s done. Men’s Health asked an expert to elaborate so it’s easier to understand what the big man is doing in that video:

“Drop sets are a great way to safely take your body to its limit without risking injury, letting you repeatedly work til technical failure,” says Men’s Health fitness director Ebenezer Samuel, C.S.C.S.

“The game plan is simple: You do as many good-form reps as possible, but the moment your mechanics fail, you drop to a weight you can handle to do more reps. You’re challenging the muscle further without inviting the mechanical flaws that could lead to injury.”

Re-stated: Load up for the max you can handle. Bust out as many reps as you can without pulling or dislocating something, take off a couple of plates, repeat. Dwayne Johnson gets it down to a perfectly manageable pair of plates before he’s roasted. 

Drop sets are not the answer for every single exercise. If you want to adopt The Rock’s approach, know that it is best done once you’re pretty well-versed in working out in general, and will not fly for every single body part. Men’s Health expert Samuel says it is “best utilized as a finisher in a workout.”

It’s also worth remembering that even if he came into the game with more gym savvy than most, Johnson still has trainers, consultants, dietitians, and physicians available at any time. He can afford to go a little harder. After all, it’s also a big part of his job. 

Still, give the drop sets a try on your next back or chest day and see if the burn is worth the effort.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is teaming up with Under Armour yet again for a new collection in his Project Rock line that drops November 8, with pieces that honor veterans and all those who serve and have served.

The official press release reads:

This Veteran’s Day, Dwayne and UA are launching the newest capsule from the Project Rock collection as part of the UA Freedom initiative.

The Veteran’s Day collab features a new camo colorway of the the Project Rock 1 sneaker, which sold out in 30 minutes a few months ago when it first launched.

The sneakers have reinforced heel support, a rubber sole for traction, and a snug compression-like knit upper that wraps around the ankle for support.

There’s also a camo colorway of Under Armour’s wireless sweat-proof gym headphones, which have an anti-slip and sweat-resistant liner on the ear pads to keep them in place.

Other items in the capsule include training gear like sweatpants, t-shirts, hoodies, and a rugged camo gym bag, all with a military aesthetic of black, grey, and olive tones.

The apparel is emblazoned with The Rock’s motto “Blood, Sweat, RESPECT” as a nod to “the sacrifices and bravery of those selfless individuals who fight to protect our freedom.”

The Veteran’s Day collection supports Team Rubicon, which is a veteran service organization that aids in disaster response, and will help the victims of Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Michael. 

It’s no secret that The Rock loves the great U.S. of A. and is beyond proud to be an American — He’s even toyed with the idea of running for President, albeit not in 2020. 

Speaking to Vanity Fair, he said he has “so much respect for the position. It’s something that I seriously considered. What I need is time to go out and learn.

“It’s a position that requires years of hard work and experience to learn the skills. There’s a lot of ground to cover, and due to my schedule, it’s not possible in 2020.”

Well, what can I say? The Rock is one powerful dude. The highest-paid actor in Hollywood, potential future President of the United States, and avid military supporter. Yep, this man can do it all.

As if he’s not already busy enough raking in a cool $124 million salary as the second highest paid actor in Hollywood, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has a handful of side gigs going on, like the tequila company he’s been cooking up, and his style collab with Under Armour on a line of gym gear called–what else?– Project Rock.

The latest collection in the collaboration is called All Day Hustle, and as the name implies, is gear for your all day hustle so that you can get swole in style.

The collection features two new colors of the Project Rock 1 sneaker — one of Under Armour’s best-selling shoes of all time — which sold out in 30 minutes when it first launched a few months ago. 

The kicks have reinforced heel support for stability while lifting and a snug top knit around the ankle for even more support, and comes in a sleek white and black ombre.

Another highlight of All Day Hustle is this rugged gym bag that comes in three  sizes – 30, 60, and 90 – 30 for a laid back grind, and 90 for “BEAST MODE.”

The Rock is saluting the armed forces with his latest Under Armour sneaker drop, the UA Project Rock 1 Men’s Training Shoes.

Dwayne Johnson outfitted these red, white and blue kicks in breathable knit fabric and even gave them loads of functional details.

There is synthetic overlay for added lateral support, knit bootie construction for ankle stability, an external heel counter for increased stability when hitting the squat rack and forefoot webbing for a snugger fit at the toes.

Steph Curry‘s birthday fell on the geekiest holiday of them all, March 14th or “Pi Day” (March 14th = 3/14 and pi = 3.14… Get it?)

To honor both the NBA superstar and mathletes alike, Under Armour just debuted its latest entry of its Steph Curry sneakers, the Curry 5.

The inspiration of “squaring the circle” is seen in the on the circular construction framing the 90-degree angle of the foot and 3.14.18 printed on the lace aglets and the numbers of pi on the sole and shoe box.

There are containment areas in the forefoot lateral wall and a heel lock in the foot to let Curry play on his toes.

Under Armour claims the sneakers were designed, “to continue helping Stephen achieve the impossible on court”…impossible like finding the last digit of pi.

They are almost as hi-tech as another of Under Armour’s Connected sneakers, which sync with your smartphone to measure your performance. Its recent HOVR Connected model goes for $130 (see below).

The Under Armour Curry 5 went for $130, but the release was limited to 314 pairs (another pi pun!) so they sold out fast. 

Expect them to go up on re-sellers for much more.
