Godzilla just invaded your six-pack. To celebrate the King of Monsters’ 70th birthday, Pabst Blue Ribbon joined forces with Toho International to unleash a limited-edition run of more than 60 million Godzilla-branded cans and boxes this fall.

PBR has long used its art can program to push packaging into collectible territory, but this collab feels like a kaiju-sized flex. The brand tapped Attack Peter, a Cuban American artist revered in kaiju circles for his bold linoleum block prints, to create four original designs. Each one brings Godzilla’s destructive energy to life, joined by fellow legends Mothra, Mechagodzilla, and my personal favorite, King Ghidorah.

The standard 12 and 16-ounce cans feature Godzilla’s snarl in stark black and white. The 25-ounce tallboys go even bigger, rotating through the other three kaiju. A limited number of cans will even pack a party trick: a cold-activated “atomic breath” effect that glows blue when the beer hits frosty perfection.

“Bringing the legendary Godzilla character into PBR’s world is massive on its own, but teaming up with Attack Peter on the designs completely leveled this partnership up,” says Rachel Keeton, Senior Brand Director at PBR. “His style and process of hand-carving these illustrations continues to push the boundaries of what the PBR art series is all about.”

For Toho, owners of the beloved Godzilla license, the mashup ensures his cultural reign continues unabated—like a friendly stroll through downtown Tokyo. “Partnering with Pabst Blue Ribbon, a historic brand with a rich legacy and passionate following fit for the King of Monsters, allows us to engage fans in a fresh and dynamic way,” says Kristin Parcell, GM of Toho International.

The cans land in October, timed perfectly for Halloween parties, dive bar nights, and tailgates—possibly to pair with Pabst Light, which PBR just launched earlier this year. Beyond their utility, they double as instant collectibles, a marriage of cult beer and cult monster that actually makes sense. Seventy years after first leveling Japan, Godzilla still looms large. Now, thanks to PBR, you can crack him open cold and carry him into the night.

Godzilla vs. Kong is a cinematic smackdown long in the making. The city-stomping lizard first hit theaters in 1954’s Godzilla, while the angry ape’s first King Kong movie debuted way back in 1933. So it’s high time these two kings have decided to settle their differences once and for all.

Godzilla and King Kong did fight once before, in the 1962 Japanese movie King Kong vs. Godzilla. In that battle royale, Kong may have eeked out a slight victory over ‘Zilla, though that’s still up for debate. Without spoiling anything in the 2021 movie, it’s also very close—though the movie technically does make good on its “One Will Fall” tagline.

So as Godzilla vs. Kong is heating up HBO Max, setting global pandemic-era box office records and is sure to destroy all competition at U.S. theaters this weekend, we’ve got a very simple question: Who “wins” at the end of the movie?

Could Warner Bros. epic monster movie clash, Godzilla vs. Kong, be the box office savior that Hollywood has been hoping for? 

The over-the-top actioner raked $32 million over the weekend—not great by pre-pandemic standards but massive for the COVID-19 era— and $48.5 million in its first five days of release. 

Variety reports that opening exceeded the industry’s expectations and easily marked the biggest debut since the start of the pandemic. 

Prior to this weekend, Wonder Woman 1984 had the biggest three-day start with $16.7 million, followed by Tom and Jerry with $14 million.

“Godzilla vs. Kong” played in 3,064 North American cinemas, the widest theater count since the pandemic began.

The turnout among ticket buyers was especially impressive because the film is also available to HBO Max subscribers for no extra fee.

Without providing any specific statistics or metrics, the studio said “Godzilla vs. Kong” had a “larger viewing audience than any other film or show on HBO Max since launch.”

Godzilla vs. Kong had previously set a new international box office pandemic record for a movie opening. While U.S. theaters are slowly reopening after nearly a year of closures, major movie chains like Regal have not yet returned.

The blockbuster season is just around the corner. Warner Bros. wants to make sure we know this by dropping the first trailer above for Godzilla vs. Kong. 

There’s plenty for fans of classic movie monsters to look forward to. The film marks the first time in more than 30 years that King Kong and Godzilla have interacted on the big screen. And it looks like it will be one hell of an “interaction.”

Both great movie monsters have been the villains in the past. This time, it looks like King Kong is playing hero and Godzilla is on a rampage. As one character says of Kong, “The world needs him to stop what’s coming.”

Here’s the Godzilla vs. Kong synopsis:

Legends collide in Godzilla vs. Kong as these mythic adversaries meet in a spectacular battle for the ages, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance.

Kong and his protectors undertake a perilous journey to find his true home, and with them is Jia, a young orphaned girl with whom he has formed a unique and powerful bond. But they unexpectedly find themselves in the path of an enraged Godzilla, cutting a swath of destruction across the globe. The epic clash between the two titans–instigated by unseen forces–is only the beginning of the mystery that lies deep within the core of the Earth.

The new video for Eminem’s “fast rap” chart-topper “Godzilla” features cameo appearances from longtime collaborator Dr. Dre and legendary ex-heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson. 

The Cole Bennett-directed clip begins with Em in a warehouse, where he imbibes “Godzilla” whiskey and encounters some surreal hallucinations.  Eminem is depicted blasting a bandit with a rocket-propelled grenade, vomiting Legos, literally spitting fire, and ascending a stack of his old CDs before Tyson knocks him out. Then we see Em in a hospital bed, where he’s tended to by Dr. Dre and Tyson. 

A final sequence celebrates late rapper Juice Wrld, who guested on “Godzilla” before he tragically died of drug-induced seizure last December.

“I hope everybody is having a good day. I hope everybody accomplish something significant,” World narrates over black and white video of himself. “Even if you didn’t accomplish significant, don’t be discouraged. Just aim to something accomplish something significant tomorrow, and the next day, and so on.” 

“If anyone is going through anything, I hope and pray that you get through it,” he adds. “And just know that you have the strength to get through whatever the fuck you’re going through, no matter what it is.”

“Godzilla” proved to be a breakout-hit off the surprise release of Eminem’s 11th studio album Music to be Murdered By. The track’s tongue-twisting third verse set the record for the rap genre’s fastest ever and even spawned a #Godzillachallenge, in which fans were called to deliver a cover without fumbling over its 10.65-words per-second pace.

Meanwhile, the “Godzilla” music video has racked up nearly 10.5 million views in less than 24 hours. 

Eminem has suddenly been everywhere lately, from dropping a surprise No. 1 album Music To Be Murdered By to a surprise performance of “Lose Yourself” at the Oscars. Now the veteran rapper has thrown down the gauntlet and challenged fans to match his freakishly fast flow on “Godzilla,” which recently broke a world record for speediest rap verse. 

“Who can spit it?” Em asked in the caption of a video of himself lipsynching to the third “Godzilla” verse, which drops a mind-boggling 224 words and 330 syllables—or a record-breaking 10.65 syllables per second. Em also teased that he has “prizes” for his favorite contestants, though no word yet on what those might be.

Following last week’s surprise release  of Eminem’s 11th studio album Music to be Murdered By, “Godzilla” has become a breakout hit and a world speed record setter. 

The track, which also features the late Chicago rapper Juice Wrld, contains a tongue-twisting third verse is likely the rap genre’s fastest ever, according to Highsnobiety. In the final 30 seconds, the Detroit-bred emcee spits 224 words containing 330 syllables, averaging 10.65 syllables and 7.23 words per second. 

Lyric data base Genius reports that Em’s “Godzilla” performance is faster than the one he recorded for Nicki Minaj’s “Majesty,” on which he raps 123 syllables and 85 words in 12 seconds for an average of 10.3 syllables and 7.08 words per second. 

“Godzilla” also outpaces 2013’s The Marshall Mathers LP 2 single “Rap God.” A section of that track sees Eminem rap 157 syllables and 99 words in 16.3 seconds for an average of 9.6 syllables and 6.07 words per second. 

Lyrical math equations aside, Music to be Murdered By is on course to become Eminem’s 10th No. 1 album, according to Billboard. Meanwhile, “Godzilla” has over 10 million listens on YouTube alone, and the music video for the anti-gun violence rap ballad “Darkness” has nearly 20 million views.

Godzilla was developed by Japanese filmmakers in the 1950s as an allegory (in part) for the threat of nuclear weapons. The Spring Drive is novel timekeeping tech developed by Japanese watchmaking giant Seiko in which watch mechanics are augmented by electronics for uncommon accuracy. This year they both have landmark anniversaries: The Spring Drive turns 20, and the King of Monsters is 65.

What do the SBGA405 and Godzilla really have in common besides anniversaries? According to Grand Seiko (Seiko’s luxury line of watches), more than you’d think.

Godzilla first stomped into Japanese movie theaters in 1954, and in that movie, the monster rampages through Ginza—Seiko’s birthplace—and obliterates the Seiko clock tower atop the Wako store, where the watchmaker first opened a retail outlet in 1952.

The Grand Seiko SGBA405 design was inspired by Godzilla in subtle ways. The watch has a red dial and black rays reminiscent of Godzilla’s back crackling with fire under the surface before it bellows heat from its mouth.

A black-coated shark strap underscored by red accents suggests the monster’s hide, and the watch’s sharp-edged design, in general, is meant to smack of Godzilla’s romping, stomping, fire-breathing legacy.

Of course, it’s just a novelty timepiece without specs worthy of the name Grand Seiko. It certainly has them:

• The SGBA405 has been calibrated for enhanced precision to the tune of just 0.5 second daily.

ESP has created a wild new Godzilla-shaped guitar to honor the famed movie monster’s 65th birthday. 

The Tokyo-based guitar giant started with an alder wood body that was meticulously crafted to resemble the towering, city-smashing reptile as it was portrayed in 2016’s Japanese kaiju movie Shin Godzilla, complete with a shrieking, toothy mouth. 

As Robb Report notes, the eye-popping instrument boasts a 24-fret, three-piece maple neck, ebony fingerboard, Floyd Rose bridge, Gotoh tuners, EMG-85 pickup, and a tail-shaped headstock. It’s based on a custom model played by Toshihiko Takamizawa, frontman for Japanese rock band The Alfee. 

When shredders really want to activate some star power, there’s a switch that activates a series of purple LED lights. The feature is meant channel the radioactive glow Godzilla gets right before it lets out a blast of havoc-wreaking “atomic breath.” 

Only five of these Godzilla Guitars will be sold for a price that’s as tall as the 393-foot lizard itself: $52,500 apiece.

The newfangled Nissan GT-R just got more ferocious. 

Nissan pumped it up with more boost from its twin turbochargers and an advanced ignition system that controls the timing of each individual cylinder contribute to the 2017 model, adding 20 horsepower to its output.

Each of the Nissan’s hand-built 3.8-liter V6 engines now cranks out 565 hp and 467 lb.-ft. of torque. To remind drivers of the car’s sheer awesomeness, the GT-R now features an incredible-sounding lightweight titanium exhaust system, backed by an active sound enhancement that boosts the aural experience, especially during hard acceleration.

Nissan’s engineers have made the GT-R’s chassis more rigid for more precise handling and control, and gave the car new 20-inch wheels for 2017.

The hood, grille and other exterior components receive a mild massage to differentiate the 2017 from the previous model, and the signature paint shade is the new four-stage Blaze Metallic orange.

The cabin receives upgraded premium materials, such as the single piece Nappa leather-wrapped instrument panel. Streamlined infotainment controls slash the button count from 27 to just 11, and the new 8-inch touch screen display is an inch larger than before, so icons are larger for easier use while driving.

“We’re proud to bring you what we feel is the ultimate GT-R that possesses amazing performance, newfound civility and a rich racing history,” concludes Hiroshi Tamura, chief product specialist for GT-R.
