Gigi Hadid is bringing the ’90s back with a flirty new Marc Jacobs style collection. The retro-inspired looks were conceived by Turkish-British designer Dilara Fındıkoğlu for Heaven by Marc Jacobs, a sub-label that references 1990s and 2000s youth culture with crop-top graphic tees, flared jeans, ballet flats and the like.

The slashed t-shirts, triangular black bikini top (accented by a clothespin on each cup), platform boots, corseted mini-dress, and other garments in the look book above are punctuated by Hadid’s choppy blonde hairstyle and heavy black eyeliner. The Heaven by Marc Jacobs shoot’s punky ethos was inspired by the soundtrack of the photographer’s youth.

“When I was creating this collection, I had my high school years in mind where I was listening to Avril Lavigne, Runaways, Bikini Kill, and Girlschool and trying to find my identity wearing metallic blue Marc Jacobs platforms, ‘Gothic Lolita’ dresses and band t-shirts,” Fındıkoğlu explained, per Hypebeast.

“I wanted to create a skirt that is similar to my Topshop high school skirt that was so short to wear to school that my teacher called my mum to throw it away which she eventually did. The print on the corset is illustrated by talented Sophie McElligott, it’s a surreal interpretation of what would Marie Antoinette’s feast look like. This small wardrobe really is the dream wardrobe of my teenage self and I want them to be dream pieces of all girls now.”

No one wants to be ripped off for their work, and famed fashion designer Marc Jacobs is reportedly being sued by Nirvana for doing just that.

According to the lawsuit, filed by Nirvana, LLC — formed in 1997 by Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and the Cobain Estate controlled by Courtney Love — the powerhouse fashion brand is using Nirvana’s iconic smiley face logo without permission in its “Bootleg Redux Grunge” collection that was released in November 2018.

The lawsuit states that Marc Jacobs “infringed Nirvana’s copyright, misleadingly used Nirvana’s trademarks, and utilized other elements with which Nirvana is widely associated to make it appear that Nirvana has endorsed or is otherwise associated with” the Marc Jacobs collection.

TMZ reports Nirvana has owned the trademark to the Kurt Cobain-designed smiley face design since 1992, and Marc Jacobs’s very slight variation is a giant rip-off.

Instead of using “X” for the eyes in the smiley face, the designer replaced them with “M” and “J,” and the shirt reads “HEAVEN” rather than “NIRVANA.”

Furthermore, the lawsuit names Nirvana as one of the founders of “Grunge,” so the “Bootleg Redux Grunge” collection even steals for the name…as well as the band’s classic song “Smells like Teen Spirit.”

“This exclusive piece from the 1993 Grunge collection was created by Marc Jacobs during his time at Perry Ellis,” the description for the t-shirt on the website reads. “This bootleg smiley tee sure smells like teen spirit.”

Smells more like copyright infringement to me.

Marc Jacobs is pretty notorious for his fashion week fetes. The previous “Bad Boy of Fashion” has always been known to work hard and party harder, and this year’s blow-out bash to start off the week of events did not disappoint.

As a celebration of Gloss, a coffee-table book about the late photographer Chris von Wagenheim, who shot Studio 54, the designer sent out the “strict dress to kill” dress code in April. The rules included “Fur coats over lingerie,” “No flat shoes,” “No matte surfaces” and “No natural looks” (although we have to say we find the natural look sexy).
