How McLaren Made Hypercar History at Monterey Car Week https://www.maxim.com/rides/how-mclaren-made-hypercar-history-at-monterey-car-week/ Mon, 25 Aug 2025 11:01:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=269423

“Pebble Beach” is the catchall for what has evolved into Monterey Car Week, with a focus on the weekend when the most important events like The Quail, the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, and the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance take place every August. This year’s edition was a notable success for many top marques, but none more so than McLaren, which made hypercar history with two incredible, multimillion-dollar vehicles, in addition to other enthralling displays and debuts.

McLaren W1 / Courtesy McLaren

First up was the W1, successor to the iconic, $20 million McLaren F1, which made its public debut in Monterey. With 1,258 hp, the W1 is the fastest and most powerful road-legal McLaren ever, and all 399 examples of the $2.1 million hypercar have already been spoken for. VIPs got to see it up close at a private Pebble Beach party held at Chateau McLaren, a secluded mansion in Carmel Valley converted into a temple to all things McLaren, that was easily the coolest event during Car Week.

Project: Endurance / Courtesy McLaren

As if that weren’t enough, at the Chateau McLaren party, which had a full-on Belle Époque France theme to suit the incredible architecture, the brand staged the U.S. debut of an even more eye-popping hypercar—the “Project: Endurance”—with which McLaren will make its long-awaited return to the top class at Le Mans in 2027. McLaren won Le Mans in 1995 with the unbeatable F1 GTR but has been absent from the hypercar class (now called LMDh) for 29 years. Project Endurance could easily catapult them straight to the podium at the legendary 24-hour race two years from now.

CEO Nick Collins / Courtesy McLaren

What’s more, at the event, new McLaren Group Holdings CEO Nick Collins and McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown announced an historic opportunity for a select number of clients to own one of the cars in a highly exclusive Project: Endurance customer partnership program, the first of its kind for a currently-campaigned race car. The purchase will include full behind-the-scenes access to their upcoming return to Le Mans, plus key team personnel and drivers, as well as a comprehensive track driving program at world-famous race circuits.

McLaren F1 / Courtesy McLaren

“There is a huge level of excitement for Project: Endurance around the globe with customers and fans,” Collins notes. “The opportunity to be one of only a few to own this Le Mans Hypercar and be directly involved in the development and testing program is a very special proposition”—the ultimate gentleman racer’s car. Also during Car Week, the brand announced a no less exciting plan to auction one of its 2026 Formula 1 cars, in another unprecedented offering of a current race car, in conjunction with RM Sotheby’s.

McLaren States of Endurance / Courtesy McLaren

All of which reinforces the fact that no other automotive brand so successfully connects clients with its racing heritage and prowess. Also on display for the first time in the Americas during Car Week was the McLaren 750S Le Mans, a special edition 750S coupe celebrating the 30th anniversary of McLaren’s historic 24 Hours of Le Mans win in 1995; as well as “States of Endurance,” a further celebration of the 30th anniversary of the 1995 Le Mans victory in which specially-designed McLaren Artura Spider and 750S supercars are driving across the country.

McLaren Elva / Courtesy McLaren

The growing focus on McLaren cars of all kinds as collectible automotive icons was reinforced by a strong showing at both The Quail and the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the two keynote Car Week events. At The Quail, a pair of the most covetable multimillion-dollar limited hypercars McLaren has ever built, the Elva and P1, both in historic Gulf Oil livery, were displayed in the “Evolution of the Supercar” section by McLaren owners. And McLaren Racing showed a number of iconic F1 cars from the past 50 years in a special class celebrating the 75th anniversary of Formula 1 at the Concours, with their 1988 MP4/4 F1 car capturing a coveted Second in Class podium.

At the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca meanwhile, McLaren further celebrated the 75th anniversary of Formula 1 by bringing three iconic F1 cars to the track: The 1974 M23/05 raced by Emerson Fittipaldi, the 1984 MP4/2 raced by Niki Lauda, and the 2024 MCL38/02 raced by Lando Norris. While two of the cars were on static display, Zak Brown drove Lauda’s MP4/2 in exhibition laps to the delight of the marque’s legion of F1 fans.

Zak Brown / Courtesy McLaren

Along with the display at the Concours this makes the most impressive collection of McLaren F1 cars ever assembled in the U.S. “It’s fantastic to be back at the Monterey Motorsports Reunion, it’s one of my favorite events of the year and it’s an honor to get behind the wheel of Lauda’s MP4/2, a car the team were so successful in,” Brown commented prior to the event. There were additional privately-owned McLarens at Laguna Seca as well, such as Richard Griot’s important 1967 M6A chassis number one.

McLaren F1 car / Courtesy McLaren

All of this comes in the midst of McLaren’s winningest Formula 1 season in nearly 20 years, as it looks like a sure bet to capture both the F1 Drivers’ and Constructors’ championships this year. Much of the Car Week initiatives were made possible by McLaren’s new owners, Abu Dhabi-based investment firm CYVN Holdings, which also acquired a a non-controlling stake in McLaren’s racing division, all under a new entity named McLaren Group Holdings (MGH).

Courtesy McLaren

The new streamlined ownership, which has also finally made the brand debt free, is eager to catapult it to the top of the elite supercar ranks, partly by building on the synergy been McLaren’s F1 cars and road cars. “Monterey Car Week is always a great opportunity for us to engage with clients, prospects and enthusiasts alike,” notes Nicolas Brown, President, McLaren, The Americas, who was present for the various events. While not eschewing its focus on engineering, technology and performance, the brand is now making great strides on the luxury and lifestyle side of the equation as well.

Courtesy McLaren

At the Chateau McLaren unveiling, Nick Collins declared that this was really just the beginning, especially for McLaren owners and enthusiasts stateside, who turn up in force for events like Pebble Beach. “The U.S. market is more than half of our global volume, and also a huge amount of our global passion,” he says. “And it’s a growing passion as well, whether it’s growing through the race theme or through the road cars…. We just want to do more and more [here]. So you’ll see us a lot more of us in the U.S.” We call that another win.

This McLaren F1 Supercar Owned By Larry Ellison Is Projected To Sell For Over $23 Million https://www.maxim.com/rides/this-mclaren-f1-supercar-owned-by-larry-ellison-is-projected-to-sell-for-over-23-million/ Mon, 21 Jul 2025 10:00:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=266128
(RM Sotheby’s)

Most of today’s most valuable classic cars would get smoked in speed tests by a modern counterparts. But the McLaren F1, dubbed the “Car of the Century” upon debut at the 1992 Monaco Grand Prix, has managed to hold on to a record for three decades and counting.

The world’s first road car to achieve downforce-producing ground effect was famously developed by Gordon Murray, the Formula 1 designer whose racers racked up 50 Grands Prix wins. While tame compared to the radical Bugattis and Koenigseggs of today, the F1 was unprecedented in the ’90s, with an all carbon fiber/Kevlar monocoque chassis, three seats, zero electronic diver aids, aerodynamic cues from the 1971 Ferrari 312P sports racer, an entirely flat floor that enabled ground effect, and a naturally aspirated 6.1-liter V12 producing 627 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque.

Natural aspiration is especially noteworthy, as RM Sotheby’s points out that the McLaren F1, under the helm of Le Mans-winning test driver Andy Wallace, set the world record for the fastest road car at 242.95 mph in 1998—a speed that’s only been surpassed by turbocharged or supercharged road cars since. That’s to say, the McLaren F1 is still the fastest naturally aspirated road car ever built.

This particular model has a couple of other things going for it. It’s one of just seven original US imports and 106 total McLaren F1s manufactured between 1992 and 1998. More notably, its original owner was Larry Ellison, the co-founder of software company Oracle whose $283.8 billion net worth currently ranks him as the world’s second-richest person, according to Forbes. Coincidentally, Elon Musk, the world’s current richest person with a $408.7 billion net worth, purchased one of the other seven McLaren F1 U.S. imports in 1999.

(RM Sotheby’s)

RM Sotheby’s has more on the vehicle’s history and provenance:

Delivered to him in August 1997, Ellison kept his car for over a decade with 062 wearing a California vanity license plate “ORACLE8,” logging less than 2,600 miles, before it was purchased by another car collector and resident of the San Francisco Bay Area via Ferrari Maserati of Silicon Valley in 2005. That second owner then sold it at auction in 2010 to its current, third owner, having been driven less than 3,500 miles from new by that point. Remarkably, the car would stay in the San Francisco Bay Area with its new owner, making it likely the only F1 to have changed owners multiple times…but never changing its immediate geographic location.

After sending 062 to McLaren Special Operations in the UK for a service, new radiators, and upgrades to the air conditioning to further enhance its drivability, the car took part in the 20th F1 Anniversary Tour of 2012, based around Lake Garda’s Grand Hotel a Villa Feltrinelli. It is shown among the F1s and F1 GTRs in Porter Press International’s McLaren F1 AnniversaryTour book.

Chassis no. 062 is offered with a number of McLaren Special Operations upgrades in addition to the aforementioned upgraded radiators and air conditioning, including aluminium fuel tanks and a sports exhaust (the original exhaust accompanies the car), and is on its original magnesium wheels, with a spare set finished in matte black. It is accompanied by the original owner’s manuals, the original luggage set, the tool roll, a travel suitcase, garment bag, car cover, F1-branded Auto Glym detailing kit, the service modem/laptop, and torque wrench.

The F1 was sent to McLaren Philadelphia in October 2023, one of eight global service centres where servicing and repairs can be carried out in a factory-approved manner on an F1 (and the only facility in North America with a McLaren F1-certified technician). At this point, the car received a rebuild of the transmission (which was handled by McLaren Special Operations in the UK), the fitment of four new tires on the original wheels, fitment of 12 new spark plugs alongside an 18-month service, some repairs to the gold foil in the engine bay, a new battery, and the aforementioned replacement of its fuel bladders with the aluminum fuel tanks. November 2024 saw further service work by McLaren Philadelphia to address the car’s air conditioning system. This work was carried out on location at the owner’s collection.

In March of this year, a detailed condition report was carried out by Kevin Hines, the aforementioned factory-authorized McLaren F1 technician based at McLaren Philadelphia. This report (which is available for inspection to qualified bidders) summarized that “it is evident that this vehicle has been well cared for during its current and previous ownership, being in very good cosmetic and mechanical condition.” Under advisement of the report, the car’s windshield was replaced with a correct, original style windscreen sourced from McLaren Special Operations in the UK. Further to the report, the car’s exceptional history file includes numerous invoices and documents dating back to the original Ameritech invoice to Ellison for the purchase of the car in 1997.

Expect Ellison’s former 1997 McLaren F1 to sell for a projected $23 million or more when it’s auctioned from August 13-16 at RM Sotheby’s Monterey event.

Why McLaren Supercars Get Better With Every Formula 1 Win https://www.maxim.com/rides/why-mclarens-supercars-get-better-with-every-formula-1-win/ Fri, 11 Jul 2025 10:16:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=265223

McLaren is having its best Formula 1 season in nearly 20 years, and looks like a good bet to win both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ World Championships this year, an impressive feat to say the least. McLaren’s star drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris have been burning up the F1 circuits, racking up 10 podiums each in the first 12 races of the season, with five wins for Piastri and four for Norris, including the Monaco Grand Prix. Beyond the mere entertainment factor, and even the boost to the brand’s stature and reputation however, there is a very real benefit to winning that translates to better road-going supercars from McLaren Automotive—and that’s more apparent than ever with the new McLaren Artura Spider.

Courtesy McLaren

The $280,000 super convertible is a revolutionary open-topped version of the glorious coupé that made headlines when it debuted in 2022 as the marque’s first-ever High-Performance Hybrid (HPH) Supercar. Perhaps more than any other manufacturer, McLaren leverages its F1 mastery in myriad ways to benefit its road car division, and never compromises when it comes to making drop-dead gorgeous rolling sculptures of speed.

Courtesy McLaren

McLaren has been winning Formula 1 races since the 1960s, and application of decades of accumulated expertise literally blew the automotive world away when they debuted their first-ever road car, the aptly-named McLaren F1, in 1992. This also paved the way for the birth of McLaren Automotive nearly 20 years later, which was an immediate and smashing success.

McLaren F1
Courtesy McLaren

Widely considered to be the world’s first hypercar, and still renowned for its groundbreaking engineering over 30 years later, F1’s now fetch around $20 million at auction. And since then every McLaren road car—current regular production began with the MP4-12C in 2011—has had a direct line to F1 coursing through its valves. And new ownership and leadership is ensuring the brand continues to thrive in all realms.

Courtesy McLaren

“McLaren holds a unique position in that we are a racing company that also makes road cars, and not the other way around,” Roger Ormisher, the marque’s Vice President of Brand and Communications, tells us. “The brand’s storied racing heritage features an enormous amount of triumph, including winning our 9th Constructor’s Championship in the 2024 season, and a hugely successful 2025 season to-date. But we’re not only winning on the track—the McLaren Artura has won a variety of accolades over the past year, and owners get the benefit of having F1-derived technology in their road-going cars.”

Courtesy McLaren

Key points of this exchange include a carbon fibre monocoque, carbon brakes, and caliper-mounted brake cooling ducts. “Combined with a 3.0-liter V6 engine with 680 hp (690 bhp) and the thrill of open-air motoring that the Artura Spider provides,” Ormisher remarks, “it’s never been easier to emulate your favorite F1 driver.” And do it in impeccable style.

Courtesy McLaren

Then there is the HOTAS (Hands On Throttle-And-Stick) system. “Although the name directly references aircraft control systems, Artura Spider features a HOTAS-inspired driver-zone binnacle with fingertip selectors for handling and powertrain modes, which also thematically reflects the cockpit ergonomics of F1 cars,” the brand notes.

Courtesy McLaren

McLaren states that the Artura Spider represents a dramatic increase in power, performance, “emotionality” and driver engagement over the original Artura, something that we were able to put to the test at the model’s global launch in Monaco. Setting out from McLaren’s temporary HQ at the ultra-posh Maybourne Riviera hotel, we felt that the car could not have been more in its element. Open-topped motoring in a supercar in Monaco is something that every true enthusiast should aspire to. Make it a McLaren and you’re in for a experience you’ll never forget.

Courtesy McLaren

The Artura Spider’s hybrid powertrain is ideally suited for the type of driving we did on the glorious slice of the South of France. Lower speed, nearly silent cruising in EV mode  was perfect for the famously labyrinth streets of the principality itself. And when we got up into the hills above it was time for a fiercer approach, accomplished with a flick of an F1-style switch. Then it was time to experience the sheer thrill of hitting 0-60 in 3 seconds; we would have needed a racetrack to rocket to the top speed of 205 mph, but McLaren doesn’t make cars that go slower than that, as we’ve had pleasure to confirm in the past.

Courtesy McLaren

As with all McLarens, the marque’s MSO branch, for McLaren Special Operations, can make any client’s car into a one-of-a-kind, 007-worthy creation. From its beginnings adding custom finishes, MSO now has the ability to do anything from a bespoke paint job all the way up to one-off limited editions. MSO was founded to maintain the iconic F1 as the 1990s superstar evolved into a museum-worthy showpiece; McLaren being McLaren, it also wanted to ensure the cars would remain competitive and stay on the road.

Courtesy McLaren

The launch of the Artura Spider came on the heels of one of the most successful quarters in the history of McLaren Automotive. At the same time, the company completed a capital restructuring process, and is now owned by one shareholder with one class of share, Abu Dhabi-based investment firm CYVN Holdings, which also acquired a a non-controlling stake in McLaren’s racing division.

Courtesy McLaren

That makes for both a leaner, simpler governance structure and a funding platform for investing in the future, all under a new entity named McLaren Group Holdings (MGH). The shift is already being felt, with longtime industry exec Nick Collins tapped to lead both MGH and McLaren Automotive earlier this year, replacing Michael Leiters.

Courtesy McLaren

There have been other appointments as well, including a new Chief Creative Officer, Alister Whelan, and Torsten Müller-Ötvös, former CEO of Rolls-Royce, who has joined McLaren’s non-executive board. Nor are they resting on their laurels; this summer the marque announced it will return to endurance racing at Le Mans in 2027, and debuted to the public the most recent successor to the F1, dubbed the W1, at the UK’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Courtesy McLaren

Only 399 examples of the $2.1 million hypercar, itself a beneficiary of Formula 1 technology and track time, are being made, and all have been spoken for. With a whopping 1,258 horsepower, twin-turbo V8 hybrid engine—more horses than the Koenigsegg Jesko and Lamborghini Reveulto—it’s the most powerful road-legal McLaren ever.

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri Pulls Hat Trick At Miami Grand Prix With Third Consecutive F1 Victory https://www.maxim.com/sports/mclarens-oscar-piastri-pulls-hat-trick-in-miami-with-third-consecutive-f1-race-win/ Mon, 05 May 2025 15:21:10 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=258613

Oscar Piastri has taken an early lead in the contest for F1’s 2025 Drivers’ Championship with a brilliant victory at the Miami Grand Prix—his third podium-topping performance in a row and fourth this year. If the 24-year-old Australian racing wunderkind keeps up the momentum, this could well be McLaren’s first Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship win in 17 years.

Piastri’s teammate Lando Norris wasn’t far behind across the Miami finish line, making it a 1-2 sweep for McLaren at the first of three U.S. races on the F1 calendar—an especially impressive feat given that Norris dropped from his second-place starting position to sixth during the first lap after losing an early battle to rival Max Verstappen.

(Clive Rose/Getty Images)

As BBC notes, Piastri also made several attempts to pass a defensive Verstappen early in the race before before finally squeezing around the Red Bull in a corner at the beginning of lap 14. From then on, Piastri put on a clinic at the front. Norris made his big movie on Verstappen at lap 17, and the McLaren drivers dominated all the way to the checkered flag. Piastri’s win also marks the first time a McLaren driver has won three races in a row since Mika Hakkinen over the 1997-1998 seasons. With 131 points, Piastri now leads Norris by 16 points in the standings, with Verstappen 32 points back in third.

“Max put up a good fight, and I just paid the price,” said Norris after the race, per The Guardian. “What can I say? If I don’t go for it, people complain. If I go for it, people complain. With Max it’s crash or don’t pass, and I just had to get him in the right position.”

“I remember two years ago in Miami we were genuinely the slowest team,” added Piastri, recalling a race in which he and Norris started in 19th and 16th to finish 17th and 18th, respectively. “To now have won the grand prix by over 35 seconds to third is an unbelievable result.” Ultimately, it was Mercedes’ George Russell who took third-place, followed by Verstappen’s fourth-place finish a couple seconds behind.

With this early string of McLaren successes, it’s now possible to imagine the end of Verstappen’s reign that’s seen the Dutchman win four consecutive Drivers’ Championships from 2021 to 2024. And just maybe, we’ve watched the passing of the torch to Piastri.

The Absolute Coolest Porsches At California’s Air|Water Auto Show https://www.maxim.com/rides/the-absolute-coolest-porsches-at-californias-airwater-auto-show/ Wed, 30 Apr 2025 10:49:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=257851
(Robert Kerian / Air|Water)

Air|Water returned to Costa Mesa, California for the third annual all-Porsche celebration of new and old, race and street, polish and patina. Introduced as an extension of the world-class Luftgekühlt event series, which focuses strictly on early air-cooled models, Air|Water runs the gamut from the earliest racers to the latest EVs, and everything in between — from a 1954 bent window 356 to gleaming new 2026 911s. Photographer Robert Kerian, who last summer shot Monterey Car Week for Maxim, on top of capturing breathtaking images of the Bugatti Tourbillon, was there to gather snapshots of the automobile industry’s latest and greatest vehicles, including hypercars, sci-fi-worthy concepts, track day weapons and more.

Stars of the show included Alain Prost’s championship-winning McLaren MP4/2B powered by the Porsche-TAG turbo engine. There was also an art installation by Joshua Vides, known for his work with Cincoro Tequila, and the latest twin-turbo 963 LMDh prototype racer. Porsche even thrilled visitors with high-speed rides in the newest 911 models on a handling course, all as visitors dodged unexpected April rain. But perhaps the highlight was the the Broad Arrow live auction, in which a super rare 1989 RUF CTR Yellowbird was brought to the podium. Just how much did this automotive unicorn sell for? Read on to find out.

(Robert Kerian / Air|Water)

This 1985 McLaren MP4/2B was powered by 1.5-liter turbocharged V6 turbo engine jointly developed by Porsche and McLaren with support from TAG (Techniques d’Avant Garde). Driven by legends Alain Prost and Niki Lauda, it scored the Frenchman’s first of four famous championships, dominating the ’85 season with five wins to claim the title by 20 points over Michele Alboreto’s Ferrari. With assistance from Lauda, the MP4/2B also won the Constructor’s Championship thanks to six wins from 12 races.

(Robert Kerian / Air|Water)

Gunther Werks brought its Project Tornado Turbo to Air|Water 2025. The 4.0L engine develops 750hp. The company also introduced its GW9-904 magnesium monoblock wheels shown on a 992 GT3 RS.

(Robert Kerian / Air|Water)

Following a recent five-day exhibition in Los Angeles, Vides brought his unique artwork to Air|Water. Working with A|W’s Creative Director Jeff Zwart, they created a unique installation celebrating Porsche’s air- and water-cooled heritage. Vides’ “Check Engine Light” solo show graces New York City May 1-6.

(Robert Kerian / Air|Water)

Singer Vehicle Design brought three of its reimagined Classic Turbo models, demonstrating the precise attention to detail that imbues each vehicle. Finished in an elegant color palette, the display reinforced the impenetrable position Singer holds in the Porsche resto-mod movement. Broad Arrow hosted another live auction, which surpassed the $15.6 million in total 2024 sales with an initial estimate of $18.5 million this year. To achieve that lofty goal, the assembled collection of cars included a 1-of-29 RUF CTR Yellowbird, complete with desirable W09 designation and RUF Zertifikat. Famed for its record-breaking 213-mph top speed, the numbers-matching CTR boasted a 469hp 3.4-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine and RUF six-speed manual transmission.

Price estimates were $4.5-5.5M and it sold for $4,680,000. There was also a 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder Weissach in Martini livery (estimated value $2.7-3M, sold for $2,590,000), 2005 Carrera GT (sold for $1,650,000), 1966 Porsche 906 ($1,528,500), 1990 Porsche 911 Reimagined by Singer ($1,006,000), 1994 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6 X88 ($555,000), 2012 RUF Rt 12 S with factory-fitted R-spec engine ($480,000), 2019 911 Speedster ($461,500), and more.

(Robert Kerian / Air|Water)

This 1976 Porsche 911 Turbo Carrera was extensively restored and modified by Makellos Classics in Escondido, CA.

(Robert Kerian / Air|Water)

A 1977 Porsche 911 with 935 Moby X conversion by Bisimoto utilizing “Moby Dick” 935 Long Tail bodywork was created from the original Andial Porsche racing molds. The car features a custom single-drive AC three-phase electric induction motor, generating 403 volts with an 18,500 RPM Redline. Its 640 horsepower is modulated by an AEM VCU200 controller tuned by Bisimoto, which also built dual boxes to accommodate LG Chem 32KwH batteries.

(Robert Kerian / Air|Water)

A #912 Porsche 911 RSR was driven by Earl Bamber, Laurens Vanthoor, Mathieu Jaminet in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. It raced with its sister car in the 2018 Petit Le Mans 24 Hours in a livery inspired by the 1998 Le Mans-winning 911 GT1.

(Robert Kerian / Air|Water)

A total of six examples of the Schuppan 962CR were built by Reynard Motorsport from 1992-1994 by Australian driver Vern Schuppan as a tribute to his 1983 24 Hours of Le Mans victory. These very rare cars have a carbon fiber monocoque, mid-engine 3.3-liter Type-935 flat-6 twin-turbo engine producing 600 hp and claimed top speed of 230 mph. The cars cost $1.5 million in 1994.

(Robert Kerian / Air|Water)

AO Racing displayed its Rexy and Roxy Porsche 911 GT3 Rawr together for the first time in public at Air|Water. The green Rexy will be replaced at the next IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship round by Roxy, giving it a chance to score a class win of its own.

(Robert Kerian / Air|Water)

The 1988 Texaco Havoline Porsche 962 (chassis 962-139) was designated a 962C with short-tail bodywork and was campaigned by Bayside Disposal Racing Team. It placed third overall at the 12 Hours of Sebring and 24 Hours of Daytona with drivers including Klaus Ludwig, Bob Wollek, Jochen Mass, and James Weaver. The car was powered by a 700 hp 3.0L flat-6 twin-turbo motor.

(Robert Kerian / Air|Water)

The 1970 Porsche 914-6 GT (chassis #1017) is one of about 25 cars built by Porsche Motorsport. It famously won its class win at the 1971 24 Hours of Daytona, finishing seventh overall. Sponsored by Sunoco of Canada, it was co-driven by owner Jacques Duval.

The Porsche 906 Carrera 6 was built in 1966 as a street-legal racer for Group 4 competition, replacing the 904. It was constructed from glass fiber to reduce weight, tipping the scales at around 1,300 lb. It was powered by a 210 horsepower six-cylinder engine.

Bowers & Wilkins Debuts High-End Earbuds Inspired By McLaren Supercars https://www.maxim.com/gear/bowers-wilkins-debuts-high-end-earbuds-inspired-by-mclaren-supercars/ Mon, 07 Apr 2025 09:43:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=255792 High-voltage automobile design meets high-voltage audio in the latest release from Bowers & Wilkins, an update of its famed Pi8 headphones that doubles down on the British luxury audio brand’s partnership with famed automaker McLaren.

(Bowers & Wilkins)

The David Beckham-approved audio brand is already the official audio partner of fast-moving McLaren, a decade-long effort that has seen Bowers & Wilkins audio equipment inside McLaren’s famed roster of vehicles.

(Bowers & Wilkins)

Co-branded touches dot the headphones themselves and the included, sleek charginng case. And the fan-favorite, award-winning Bowers & Wilkins Pi8 already boast exceptional sound quality, this time revamped with more than a few notable nods to iconic McLaren design.

(Bowers & Wilkins)

Chief among them is the use of McLaren’s instantly recognizable color scheme, fusing McLaren Papaya orange with Galvanic Grey for bold, tasteful appeal. To hear Bowers & Wilkins tell it, “the Pi8
McLaren Edition offers the high-performance sound quality synonymous with Bowers & Wilkins, coupled with a design that connects fans of McLaren cars to the visual identity of the McLaren brand.”

(Bowers & Wilkins)

The world of high-end automotive is swiftly turning into a true lifestyle, as Chivas Regal teams with the likes of F1 driver Charles Leclerc and Louis Vuitton partners with Formula 1 on luxe luggage fit for globetrotting drivers. The latest from Bowers & Wilkins certainly builds on that impressive pedigree with intricate details and inspired technical specifications.

(Bowers & Wilkins)

The new headphones, which will accompany the McLaren team across the globe in preparation for F1 races (among other audio gear from Bowers & Wilkins) sit at an ideal intersection of luxury audio and high-end performance auto. “We’re excited to see how it’s received by Bowers & Wilkins and McLaren fans alike,” said Giles Pocock, Bowers & Wilkins’ vice president of brand marketing. Only time will tell, but the partnership appears to be a match made in heaven, and for now, the new Bowers & Wilkins x McLaren Pi8 Headphones are available for pre-order at Bowers & Wilkins for $499.

‘World’s Most Exclusive’ Cars Showcased In Luxe Photo Book https://www.maxim.com/rides/the-worlds-most-exclusive-cars-rev-up-this-luxe-photo-book/ Wed, 28 Aug 2024 10:03:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=240251

Aspiring collectors and gearheads with discerning tastes should take note of the latest automotive tome from luxury book publisher Assouline. The title—Rare Cars The World’s Most Exclusive Rides—tells readers exactly what to expect from this handsome coffee table book, which is elegantly presented in a luxe metal clamshell lined with hand-stitched Italian leather.

Across and 203 illustrations and 304 pages penned by Road & Track editor-at-large A.J. Baime, you’ll find the one-of-two 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé—a $143 million prototype that became the world’s most expensive car in 2022. Another entry is dedicated to the Ferrari 250 GTO, which reigns as the world’s most expensive production car. The highest confirmed auction sale for the in-demand Prancing Horse is $51.7 million, but the book cites the harder-to-confirm $70 million private sale—not that it matters currently, as both surpass every other production car sales record.

Of course, monetary value isn’t the point; it’s just a byproduct of the impact these machines have made. There’s the paradigm-shifting McLaren F1, proclaimed by many to be the “greatest supercar of all time” and the first made of carbon fiber. The lesser-known W Motors Lykan HyperSport is no less impressive in its own right. Named after a species of werewolf, the one-of-seven hypercar’s diamond-inset LED headlights and mesmerizing swan doors gave it enough visual intrigue to earn a starring role in Furious 7—one still runs around on real roadways as part of the Abu Dhabi police department. The Pagani Zonda HP Barchetta, as Baime noted, was not only the most powerful version of Horacio Pagani’s first hypercar, but so exclusive that outlets worldwide picked up news of a crashed example in 2022.

(Assouline)

“The cars in this book are masterpieces in the way works of art can be masterpieces,” Baime writes. “Only these art pieces are animate. They can provide joy like no Michelangelo ever could.”

True to the exorbitantly-priced autos within, Rare Cars is available now for the decidedly decadent price of $2,500 per book.

McLaren Debuts ‘World’s Most Powerful’ Electric Mountain Bikes https://www.maxim.com/rides/mclaren-debuts-worlds-most-powerful-electric-mountain-bikes/ Mon, 20 May 2024 12:03:04 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=233472 Speed tends to translate across industries and design disciplines, at least if you have the prowess and power of the open road in your wheelhouse. McLaren certainly has plenty of both to go around, along with impressive design know-how, and that now translates into a new line of McLaren electric mountain bikes.

(McLaren)

McLaren bills its lineup of four sleek, sturdy and rugged two-wheelers as the “world’s most powerful trail-legal electric mountain bikes,” including the “Earth-stopping 161Nm of torque” of the top-of-the-line Extreme 600.

More than 1,000 engineering hours went into the Extreme 600, including a razor-sharp focus on the  Class A surface standards of its full carbon fiber frame.

(McLaren)

As McLaren notes, that model in particular is bolstered by “a wickedly powerful 600W mid-drive motor” and McLaren’s signature orange-and-black color specs.

(McLaren)

The McLaren Sport 600, on the other hand, is made to slice through rugged trail rides with ease, featuring made-to-order construction and a powerful yet sleek 600-watt motor with a removable 48-volt battery.

(McLaren)

McLaren bills the Extreme 250, another option boasting a full carbon fiber frame, as a machine where “hypercar design meets high-performance electric bike.”

(McLaren)

True to its name, the 250-watt mid-drive motor  delivers slightly less torque than its larger counterparts, but that move aids in longer battery life (and longer rides, by extension).

(McLaren)

The Sport 250 is also built with the same smaller-but-powerful motor featuring 250 watts, and McLaren notes that the streamlined bike is a perfect “translation of McLaren’s automotive legacy applied to an aggressive and uncompromising eMTB platform.”

Each of these four bikes, complete with McLaren branding, premium components and intensive attention to detail, starts shipping this coming August: That’s more than enough time to conquer trails in lightning-fast fashion with a bold new E-bike.

Jack Daniel’s & McLaren Racing Launch Whiskey Collab For F1 Season https://www.maxim.com/food-drink/mclaren-racing-revs-up-liter-bottles-of-jack-daniels-whiskey-for-f1-season/ Thu, 28 Mar 2024 08:07:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=229972
(Jack Daniel’s/McLaren)

A Jack Daniel’s bottle clad in a very specific orange color can only mean one thing: a new, limited-edition McLaren Racing bottle.

Like last year, the Tennessee whiskey stalwart and British Formula One team have collaborated on a JD bottle dressed in the same papaya orange shade that wraps MCL38 race cars.

The whiskey within doesn’t stray from Jack Daniel’s tried-and-true specs. Starting with a grain bill of 80% corn, 8% rye, and 12% malted barley, the distillate is filtered through 10 feet of charcoal and aged in American white oak barrels before being bottled at 80 proof (40% abv).

“We’re proud to celebrate the continued partnership between McLaren and Jack Daniel’s, two brands known around the world for representing a spirit of boldness and authenticity,” said Jack Daniel’s brand director Jamie Butler. “Together, we’ve created unmatched fan experiences around F1 races and are looking to build upon that success and accelerate in the new race season.”

The timing of the announcement is close to perfect. At his most recent F1 outing, the Australian Grand Prix, McLaren Racing driver Lando Norris claimed his 14th career podium and first since 2023’s Sao Paulo GP. Between his and teammate Oscar Piastri’s efforts, McLaren Racing comfortably holds third in the 2024 Constructors’ Standings, which is beyond expectations given Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes’ historic dominance.

“We are delighted to be collaborating with Jack Daniel’s as they release another limited-edition bottle,” added McLaren Racing executive Matt Dennington. “The launch of last year’s bottle was a huge success, and it is great that we continue to launch unique and exciting activations for our fans globally.”

Look out for liter-sized Jack Daniel’s x McLaren Racing bottles online and in select U.S. markets and F1 race cities internationally.
