Menswear designer Todd Snyder is once again setting sail with Sperry—this time for an elevated take on the heritage footwear brand’s iconic boat shoe and CVO deck sneaker. Snyder’s latest collaboration is anchored by an elegant update of Sperry’s Authentic Original Boat Shoe that’s been a staple of preppie style for generations. Handsomely constructed from luxe aniline leather in a buttery tan or deep black with a sheepskin leather lining, they feature a rugged Vibram sole designed to deliver enhanced grip everywhere from the boat deck to rain-slickened streets. Much like Snyder and Sperry’s previous boat shoe collab in suede, the leather limited editions are an eye-catching upgrade from Sperry’s regular Top-Siders, and are expected to develop a rich patina over time.

They retain the stylistic DNA of the classic Top-Sider while showcasing a noticeably more substantial construction and an elegant, minimalist look. There’s no sailboat logo next to the laces, no “Sperry Top-Sider” emblazoned on the heel, no metal around the eyelets. The latest special-edition iteration of the beloved deck shoe is heavier, cleaner-looking and generally feels more expensive than a regular Top-Sider. That upscale status is further signified by the “Sperry by Todd Snyder” custom collector’s box that the shoes arrive in, along with a matching drawstring dust bag.

The new Sperry x Todd Snyder drop also includes Snyder’s update of the original non-slip deck sneaker, the Circular Vamp Oxford, or CVO, which happens to be celebrating its 90th anniversary. The Snyder version refurbishes the classic silhouette with weatherproof British Ventile fabric in black or cream in a nod to both its nautical heritage and military roots, and further modernizes it with a raised and rubberized gum sole and a double-layered upper. The boat-ready sneakers also feature razor-cut wave siping etched into the rubber outsole, a canvas lining and a heel pull-tab for easier on/off access.

“Designing this collection was a chance to honor a brand that’s been a staple in my wardrobe for decades,” Snyder said in a statement announcing his latest collaboration. “Sperry’s 90-year legacy—rooted in authenticity, innovation, and Americana—gave us the perfect foundation to build upon. I wanted to respect that tradition while introducing thoughtful updates that reflect today’s more refined, yet relaxed, approach to dressing—elevating something classic and utilitarian through design and craftsmanship.”

And when the world of the sneakerhead collides with a boundary-pushing outlook from avant-garde (and more traditional) designers, the results are worth clearing some space in your closet. To say it’s intriguing to see how an outsider interprets a famed brand is an understatement. Here’s a look at a few of the most hyped crossover collabs of the moment between luxury designers, famed fashion houses and covetable, instantly recognizable footwear giants.

BAPE x COMME des GARÇONS BAPE STA

In a toast to five years of its own outpost within the Comme des Garçons Osaka flagship, famed streetwear pioneers BAPE are teaming with Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo’s iconoclastic luxury brand on a mysterious pair of sneakers recently teased online by the Bape Japan Instagram account. They follow the silhouette of the BAPE STA design, with a striking silver side-panel motif, and can be found at the Comme des Garçons Osaka store as of today. $254

Rick Owens x Converse TURBOWPN Ox

Rick Owens—that master of boundary-pushing, instantly striking and androgynous luxury fashion—has a penchant for interpreting silhouettes in a way that’s almost genius: Not even a pair of classic Converse sneakers looks ordinary under Owens’ watchful eye. The Converse x DRKSHDW line puts an entirely new spin on low-top Converse sneakers, and the latest installment in the partnership (set to release April 29th) takes the low-cut Ox sneaker and gives it an ultra-chunky sole and elongated tongue, among other distinctive features. $200

Todd Snyder x New Balance 574 Legacy Sneakers

Designer Todd Snyder has a deep appreciation for the classics from head to toe, dating back to his 2016 partnership with P.F. Flyers and carried forward through ongoing partnerships with the likes of Timex, Champion and (lately) Unimatic watches. New Balance sneakers are also a natural pairing alongside Snyder’s effortlessly cool assortment of faded denim, crisp chinos, versatile Oxford shirting and tasteful bomber jackets: All should pair easily this spring and summer with his latest New Balance collab, this time done in a sleek grey color inspired by the streetwear-meets-prep ethos of Japanese style. $120

MM6 Maison Margiela X Salomon Spectur 2

When the highly technical meets high fashion (see, for example, Balenciaga’s insane hiking sneakers released earlier this year), it’s a merger between best-in-class materials and a best-in-class design outlook. Neither a pure hiking sneaker nor a sneaker statement only suited for the runways, Salomon’s partnership with Maison Margiela goes well beyond what a set of subtle black sneakers can be. Expect a chunky outsole and heel, plenty of comfort in every stride, and plenty of second looks from passerby eager to cop a piece of streetwear sneaker style. $341

The limited-edition Todd Snyder x UNIMATIC Modello Tre U3FB-TS is far from the New York City designer’s first foray into the watch world, as Snyder has teamed up with Timex for a number of years on a series of highly affordable, ultra-refined dress watches. It is, however, the J. Crew and Ralph Lauren alum’s first partnership with the industrially minded Italian watchmakers at UNIMATIC, a cult favorite watchmaker that’s made waves in its first decade in business (including innovative collaborations with the likes of Hodinkee).

The partnership sees Snyder honing his keen eye for design alongside UNIMATIC co-founders Giovanni Moro and Simone Nunziato. And while global fashion trends tend to pop up in person, Snyder found the Italian watchmakler online, he said. “I first discovered UNIMATIC a few years ago on Pinterest — I’m an obsessive Pinterest user. I was instantly drawn in and thought, ‘What is this? These are incredible.’” Snyder said. “I started incorporating UNIMATIC into my seasonal mood boards, always envisioning our guy, his life, and of course, the watch he’s wearing. When I finally met Giovanni and Simone from UNIMATIC, I knew — this was the watch.”

Just 100 individually numbered units of the accessible, $718 VK64 meca-quartz movement-powered watch are available. The prospect of snagging this rugged, field-and-sea-approved, water-resistant dive timepiece should prove plenty alluring. The watch builds off a crisp black case with a dark olive “reverse panda” dial featuring stone-colored sub-dials, and is billed by the company as the “pinnacle of both Todd’s sharp aesthetic eye and UNIMATIC’s precision watch-making, all contained with one exceptionally handsome timepiece.”

Hits of Todd Snyder’s signature international orange stand out cleanly on the sub-dials, which also pairs nicely with another Snyder signature: A deep, rich olive found in the seatbelt NATO strap. Choosing those two signature colors made perfect sense for the designer, he said.

“For this collaboration, I set out to design something special for those who appreciate modern craftsmanship,” Snyder noted, adding that “the black case was my foundation, but I knew it needed my signature Snyder olive and a bold pop of orange.

The designer, also recently named the creative director of Woolrich Black Label, noted that the “watch is a reflection of my style.
