(Mercedes-Benz)

Mercedes is honoring its historic 12-pot lineage’s power, performance, and poshness with the the ultra exclusive Mercedes-Maybach V12 Edition. The massive powerplant has been a hallmark of the brand since the 1930s, when the first Maybach-produced 12-cylinder debuted in the Maybach Zeppelin. That legendary model, engineered by Karl Maybach, was lauded for its technically advanced features, performance, and ride comfort, described in a 1934 brochure as “the ultimate automobile of wish fulfilment, characterized by distinguished elegance and power.” The Maybach Zeppelin was one of few of its contemporaries that could crack 100 mph.

The Mercedes V12s that are so revered today were born in the 1990s with the M120, which not only powered its most opulent S-Class sedans but served as the basis for the legendary CLK GRT supercar and even the Pagani Zonda. The modern twin-turbo iteration of the German marque’s V12 primarily powers the Mercedes-Maybach S 680, in which it develops 612 horsepower that pushes the 5,000 pound-plus behemoth to 62 mph in 4.5 seconds.

That very vehicle serves as the basis for the V12 Edition seen here, which has been beautified by the Mercedes’ Manufaktur personalization division. The striking two-tone exterior features olive metallic on the upper body and obsidian black metallic on the lower, separated by a contrasting high-tech silver metallic pinstripe—a meticulous paint application that can take up to ten working days. The exterior’s olive metallic also appears on the five-hole forged wheels but the most striking single detail is arguably the C-pillar’s unique Maybach emblem, featuring chrome, gold and a prominent “12,” a direct tribute to the hood ornament of the historic Maybach Zeppelin.

Inside, the cabin brings a smorgasbord of bespoke luxury with Nappa leather in Manufaktur-exclusive saddle brown and complementing high-gloss brown burr walnut wood trim that extends to the handcrafted steering wheel. The vehicle’s rarity is plainly marked by a “1 of 50” badge in the center console and a golden inlay on the rear center console, which features the Maybach emblem framed by twelve golden circles. This intricate inlay alone requires up to seven working days of precise handcraftsmanship. Each of the 50 vehicles will also come with bespoke accessories, including Robbe & Berking silver-plated champagne flutes with edition-specific engraving and a handcrafted key gift box.

The Mercedes-Maybach V12 Edition is only available in select markets, with deliveries to customers set to begin in autumn 2025.

Mercedes-Benz Reimagines Limousine Luxury With Vision V Concept Van https://www.maxim.com/rides/mercedes-benz-reimagines-limousine-lifestyle-with-vision-v-concept-van/ Tue, 12 Aug 2025 16:00:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=268123
(Mercedes-Benz Vision V Concept)

Last week, under the shadowy cloak of a heavily secured Burbank safe house (OK, it was really just a hanger at the Hollywood Burbank Airport), Mercedes-Benz revealed its solution for future commuting to a select group of intrepid reporters. Or at least commuting when the owner doesn’t want to be doing any of the driving—which given the increasing gridlock of our cities, may just become the norm.

Mercedes-Benz’s latest concept, the Vision V, reimagines the luxury stretch limousine as an elegant, stunningly appointed, spacious and robust tech-infused multipurpose vehicle (MPV). Mercedes-Benz Vans Technology Communications Spokesperson Ralph Wagenknecht revealed the Vision V as a sort of sneak peek into the brand’s forthcoming top-end production model, the Mercedes-Benz VLS, which along with the VLE will be part of a new segment of “Grand Limousines” set to launch in 2026.

(Our first view of the Mercedes-Benz Vision V Concept)

“It’s not only ushering a new era regarding the architecture, but also portfolio expansion and extension of markets,” Wagenknecht explained just before we took a walk around the futuristic vehicle. “We will therefore expand the portfolio to the top end segment, and offer these grand limousines in North America for the first time.” Because the framework and chassis of these new vehicles (Benz’s modular and scalable Van Electric Architecture (VAN.EA)) was designed completely fresh from a clean sheet, engineers were able to able to optimize them for what Benz is calling a cocooning effect.

“We’re doing it with full conviction because we see the enormous potential for customers for whom the available space in the car plays an enormous role,” Wagenknecht continues. “I think they will appreciate that we have that open spacious interior design, with the comfort and safety of a private lounge.”

(Mercedes-Benz Vision V Concept)

A Private Lounge Cocoon

In the vast space of the hangar, with a private jet parked dramatically behind it, from the first view the Vision V makes an instant impact. Yes it’s a van (or MPV, in Benz parlance), but its futuristic lines, squat silhouette and huge 24-inch chrome plates anchoring the corners elevate the Vision V from the norm. Then watching the concept’s wide van doors slide open, Merc’s “Private Lounge” nickname for the cabin becomes instantly clear. The first thing that pops is the blizzard white Nappa leather wrapping nearly every surface, and the Michelin Man-like captain’s chairs seemingly plucked from a 60’s sci-fi flick. Designed to feel like a spacious, open lounge, the interior features a cornucopia of luxurious materials beyond the Nappa whites, including shimmering white silk, glass display cases and open-pore burr wood, all complimented with hyper-modern, tech-savvy elements—more on that in a bit.

The center console, which automatically adjusts to seating position for maximum comfort, doubles as a display cabinet, and features a touchpad for the infotainment system and even a fold-out table that can be used as a chessboard. Designers integrated transparent sideboard cabinets into the dark wood trim along the side walls to store personal items like handbags, sunglasses, fannypacks, smartphones or whatever. You can find the chess pieces handsomely displayed here, too.

Inarguably the prime comfort feature for the driven class are the Vision V’s lounge chair-inspired first-class seats. Bedazzled with polished aluminum bases and shiny clasps, the futuristic thrones recline into a complete flatbed position for the quick post-lunch coma cat nap, or even overnight sleep if needed. At one point we tilted them all the way back, nearly dozing off in the cozy comforts right there.

Our favorite touch though just might be the glass wall separating the “Private Lounge” from the driver’s area. Like that Spinal Tap scene where the boys raise the partition to stop hearing their driver’s soliloquy on Frank Sinatra, riders in the back can transition the glass from transparent to opaque, either fully or in sections, providing easy communication with the driver or ultimate privacy. Or anywhere in between.

(Retractable 65″ screen and viewing windows of the Mercedes-Benz Vision V Concept)

Full Tech Immersion

Once we closed the doors, the next-level digital cocoon of the “Private Lounge” takes over. Rising from below your feet, and visible via a set of small porthole windows as it rolls out, a massive flexible 65-inch retracts for your opulent entertainment. With 4K resolution and Dolby Vision technology, this bright cinema screen instantly takes focal point. Scrolling through seven “interactive worlds of experience,” including Discovery, Gaming, Work, Shopping, and even Karaoke, we settle on Entertainment and cue up the F1 trailer in all its Brad Pittian glory. Not only does the massive screen mesmerize, but the 42 surround-sound speakers, including haptic exciters embedded in the seats, literally shake our bums with every screaming overtake.

Other “worlds” like Relax take full advantage of the seven projectors hidden along the floor and in the futuristic chandelier on the roof. While gentle music plays they project rippling waves throughout the cabin’s surfaces, creating a dynamic 360-degree digital environment. This is still Mercedes, home of AMG, so of course Mercedes doesn’t forget the driver. The Vision V’s cockpit provides him/her a three screen Superscreen extending from pillar to pillar, providing real-time graphics, nav and essential information.

(The driver’s not forgotten in the Mercedes-Benz Vision V Concept)

Aerodynamic Exterior Package

While sleek and quintessentially futuristic, the exterior of the Vision V emphasizes aerodynamics over all. An evolution of Mercedes-Benz’s “sensual purity” philosophy, the concept van’s sculptural look features short overhangs on both ends, a narrow waist, and a roofline that flows smoothly into a well-rounded rear. Pronounced power domes on the hood and large wheel arches accentuate the Vision V’s sporty proportions. Meanwhile a trio of horizontal illuminated glass louvres distinguish the fascia’s reinterpreted chrome radiator grille, bookended by LED headlights formed like crystal versions of Mercedes’ iconic Tristar.

(The sleek packaging of the Mercedes-Benz Vision V Concept)

When we approached from the front, the the Vision V greeted us with a dynamic light show across all the louvres, dazzling with 200 LED elements lighting up around the grille, then spreading to another 190 LEDs under hood before moving to Tristar headlamps. A brightly illuminated Mercedes Tristar on the hood, the first of its kind on any Benz, culminates the fancy lightshow. The vehicle also features a solar roof with 168 solar cells, which can generate an average of around 2.08 kWh of energy per day, potentially providing an average daily range of about 13.5 miles from solar power alone. The vehicle’s long wheelbase—critical for the Private Lounge’s space and stability—is offset by rear axle steering, bringing much needed turning radius to the equation.

Conclusion

While clearly a concept, the Vision V makes a promise for Mercedes-Benz’s upcoming VLE and VLS MPVs that we cannot wait to see in the flesh. The “Grand Limousines” are set to debut next year, with both combustion and full EV powertrains.

This Mercedes-AMG GT 63 Limited Edition Celebrates Brad Pitt’s ‘F1’ Movie https://www.maxim.com/entertainment/this-mercedes-amg-gt-63-limited-edition-celebrates-f1-starring-brad-pitt/ Tue, 06 May 2025 09:08:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=258663
(Mercedes-Benz)

Anticipation surrounding F1—premiering this June—is hitting the rev limiter, with none other than seven-time champ and producer Lewis Hamilton promising that the Brad Pitt- and Damian Idris-led blockbuster is “as authentic a racing movie has ever been.” Mercedes, with which Hamilton won six of his seven F1 titles, is capitalizing on the fervor with an ultra-exclusive edition of its super-grand tourer.

The 2026 AMG GT 63 “APXGP Edition,” named for the movie’s fictional APXGP team, was fittingly unveiled at the 2025 Miami GP. This limited-edition vehicle, with only 52 units slated for production globally, directly mirrors the design of the APXGP liveries and elements donned by the team’s F1 cars in the film (which are actually modified Formula 2 cars). Key elements include striking APXGP Edition paint finish with hand-applied Race Gold accents, 21-inch matte Race Gold forged wheels, Race Gold interior detailing, contrast stitching on the black Nappa leather AMG Performance seats, and carbon fiber trim elements with gold threads.

Aside from the APXGP references, the cars are also equipped with the Carbon Fiber package’s front splitter, side sill trims, rear diffuser, as well as the AMG Aerodynamics package, which adds a fixed carbon fiber rear wing on the trunk lid. The AMG Extended Night Package adds black chrome to the radiator grille, AMG crest, model badging and Mercedes star at the rear of the vehicle. An AMG fuel filler cap in silver chrome with AMG lettering, a 15-speaker Burmester sound system, AMG TRACK PACE on-board telemetry, and a suspension-lifting system for climbing speed bumps are just some of the other opulent amenities offered by the uninhibited spec.

(Mercedes-Benz)

The German marque’s other tie-ins with F1 are numerous, as the real Mercedes-AMG team also provided expertise and a fleet of high-performance vehicles that can be seen on-screen, including AMG SL, G-Class, and GT models roadgoing models and even the official Mercedes-AMG Safety and Medical Cars. Not to mention, their former star racing driver has been part of the project since the jump.

“Watching Brad drive around at speeds over 180 miles an hour was really impressive to see because it’s not something you can just learn overnight,” Hamilton said of Pitt’s performance ahead of the F1 season opener in Australia earlier this year. “The dedication and the focus that Brad put into this process has been amazing to witness.”

Helmed by Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski, F1 races into U.S. theaters on June 27, 2025. Check out the official trailer below:

This Mercedes-Benz Vision V Concept May Be The Coolest Minivan Ever https://www.maxim.com/rides/this-mercedes-benz-vision-v-concept-may-be-the-coolest-minivan-ever/ Thu, 24 Apr 2025 09:00:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=257464
(Mercedes-Benz)

If a client commissioned Rolls-Royce to trick out their Honda Odyssey, it might look like the new Mercedes-Benz Vision V. While only a concept, it’s the first example from the German marque’s Van Electric Architecture (VAN.EA), a new platform set to debut in 2026 that aims to redefine spacious vehicles, targeting the luxury segment with an emphasis on what Mercedes calls a “Private Lounge” experience.

(Mercedes-Benz)

The concept’s crowning feature is an open, lounge-inspired interior accessible by a large, automatically opening “portal”-door on the right side and complemented by an illuminated, retractable running board. Luxe materials like crystal white Nappa leather and shimmering white silk contrast with open-pore burr wood trim and integrated display cabinets, one of which contains a fold-out chessboard.

(Mercedes-Benz)

The space also incorporates a video game console, a retractable 65-inch cinema screen with split-screen functionality that rises from within the floor, a surround-sound system and seven integrated projectors—it’s essentially a mobile entertainment room that’s begging to go on cross-county road trips. The side windows can also function as additional projection surfaces, creating a 360-degree digital experience. The switchable glass technology extends to the partition, floor slats, and windowpanes, offering customizable privacy and sun protection.

Meanwhile, the cockpit of the Vision V features a state-of-the-art digital experience centered around a “Superscreen” that spans the width of the dashboard. The user interface is designed for individual preferences, providing real-time graphics and augmented reality navigation. Outside, the exterior design emphasizes aerodynamic efficiency with a sleek silhouette, short overhangs, and a flowing roofline. Notable design elements include a reimagined version of Mercedes’ chrome radiator grille featuring illuminated glass louvres and LED lighting.

(Mercedes-Benz)

If this concept is anything like an upcoming production model, Mercedes may have just made the world’s coolest minivan.

Mercedes-AMG Debuts Wild New Electric Supercar Concept https://www.maxim.com/rides/mercedes-amg-debuts-crazy-new-electric-supercar-concept/ Thu, 06 Mar 2025 11:00:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=253132 In looking to the future, Mercedes-AMG has drawn from the past, straddling the line between the old and the new with the utterly impressive Mercedes-AMG Vision One-Eleven electric supercar, just announced by the performance sub-brand (as part of more than 20 forthcoming Mercedes rides, it should be noted).

(Mercedes-AMG)

The concept, the automaker notes, “walks the line between time machine and spaceship,” with the sleek looks and futuristic design cues to match. The stunning new set of wheels draws heavily from the 1960s- and 1970s-era Mercedes-Benz C 111, with gullwing doors and a laundry list of features that made it “a revolutionary of its time,” the automaker added.

(Mercedes-AMG)

According to Robb Report, the vehicle would be the quickest AMG to date, boasting brand-new, proprietary battery technology and an axial-flux motor, all in a bid to “unlock unseen potential in electric performance driving,” Mercedes-Benz said in an announcement detailing the fresh set of wheels.

(Mercedes-AMG)

The One-Eleven’s interior is as bold and innovative as its fresh, copper orange exterior, with seats that fit flush to the floor and design detailing that has more in common with a luxury lounge than a typical sports car seat.

(Mercedes-AMG)

There’s also the option to select seats designed in Race mode, which channels Mercedes-AMG’s F1 seat designs. The Lounge seating arrangement, meanwhile, is possible thanks to a more compact motor design, also billed as “exceptionally powerful” despite its pared-down size.

(Mercedes-AMG)

The interior is complemented by a large-format, 8-bit pixel display screen that’s also compatible with an included Magic Leap 2 augmented reality headset. Further cementing its presence as a luxury lifestyle auto brand, the ritzy ride is complemented by its own “LIMITED EDITION 1 OF 111 collection” that includes apparel, a weekender bag and sunglasses.

(Mercedes-AMG)

Every detail has been thoughtfully considered, including a host of polished aluminum elements throughout, down to the accelerator, brake pedals, steering wheel spokes and even the harness buckle. Mercedes-Benz notes the release is especially forward-thinking: “When the engineers of Stuttgart craft their vision into reality, discovering the unknown is the greatest appeal.” Pricing details are scarce at the moment, but a tantalizing glimpse into the future can be found online at Mercedes-Benz.

This Gorgeous Mercedes 300SL Gullwing Sold For Over $2 Million https://www.maxim.com/rides/this-gorgeous-mercedes-300sl-gullwing-is-now-up-for-grabs/ Wed, 11 Dec 2024 12:04:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=247188
(Robin Adams/RM Sotheby’s)

There are innumerable classic European cars that would qualify as crown jewels. But narrow the focus to 1950s automobiles, and the list shortens to a handful: the Jaguar XK120, the Aston Martin DB4, the Ferrari 166 and debatably the most iconic of the bunch: the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing.

(Robin Adams/RM Sotheby’s)

The retro silver arrow model holds several distinctions. In 2022, a one-of-two 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe prototype set the record for the most expensive car ever sold at $143 million, a figure that hasn’t even been approached since. In its day, the Formula One-bred German coupe was the world’s fastest road-going vehicle. While the production version made those distinctive gullwing-style doors famous, Mercedes-Benz first adopted the design on the racing version three years earlier to save weight. The race cars would win titles at the Nurburgring, Carrera Panamericana and Le Mans throughout 1952 before 1,400 production coupes were manufactured from 1954 to 1957.

(Robin Adams/RM Sotheby’s)

One of those 1,400 is this 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing, originally ordered and delivered to a U.S. Army troop who was stationed in Berlin in May of 1956. Numerous specifications stand out, including the special-order Fire Engine Red over black leather interior, quick-release Rudge wheels, a sport suspension, and a 3.0-liter inline-six that runs racier internals and a factory-upgrade camshaft to achieve 240 horsepower. After the car passed from its owner to the current consigner in the 1990s, it was treated to a no-expense-spared restoration at the hands of renowned 300 SL specialist Rudi Koniczek.

(Robin Adams/RM Sotheby’s)

RM Sotheby’s has more information on his efforts and the car’s condition today:

Invoices and work orders on file illustrate more than $92,000 CAD of work completed to fully disassemble the Gullwing, remediate any and all issues to the chassis, underpinnings, and body shell, re-chrome accessory trim, rebuild the transmission, and numerous other areas of focus.

An additional $70,000 USD of invoices for work performed under the care of the previous owner indicate that 300 SL specialist German Auto Repair of Fresno, California fit a new red leather interior, windshield, and side windows, and rebuilt the numbers-matching NSL engine

Today, the car remains resplendent, masterfully refinished in the model’s signature color combination of Silver Metallic (DB 180) over red leather (1079). Comparing identification numbers of the various components with those listed on the factory data card confirms that the Gullwing retains its numbers-matching chassis, NSL engine, body, and axles, both front and rear. The car’s gearbox, number 7500698, is a replacement unit from 1957. Additionally, this outstanding 300 SL Gullwing is equipped with five Rudge wheels showing date codes corresponding to the car’s time of production, as well as two pieces of fitted luggage trimmed in red leather, and a period-correct, wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel. The original steering wheel is included in the sale.

(Robin Adams/RM Sotheby’s)

Valued at between $1.6 and $2 million, this 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing outsold its pre-auction estimate when it fetched $2,040,000 at RM Sotheby’s Arizona Car Week in January 2025.

These Rare Mercedes-Benz CLK GTRs Could Fetch Millions At The Las Vegas Grand Prix https://www.maxim.com/rides/these-rare-mercedes-benz-roadsters-could-fetch-millions-at-f1s-las-vegas-gp/ Fri, 10 Nov 2023 12:27:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=220281

In celebration of Formula One’s inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix, RM Sotheby’s will be auctioning 32 collectable exotic cars at Las Vegas Wynn’s Awakening Theater on November 17, two days before race day.

1999 Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Coupe (©2023 Courtesy of RM Sotheby’s)

Sought-after six- and seven-figure models from McLaren, Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini, Lexus and Ford are all on the docket, but the most valuable of the lot are a pair of Mercedes-Benz CLK GTRs that could collectively fetch $22 million.

2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Roadster (Neil Fraser ©2023 Courtesy of RM Sotheby’s)

Aside from a 2013 Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 W04 race car valued at between $10 and $15 million, the cash cow of RM Sotheby’s Las Vegas auction is an ultra-low mileage 2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Roadster that’s expected to fetch anywhere from $10.5 to $13 million.

2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Roadster (Neil Fraser ©2023 Courtesy of RM Sotheby’s)

According to the auction house, the exclusive model was born of Mercedes executives’ for more titles after its C-Class 190 E Evos dominated the German Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft (DTM) series from 1994 to 1996. They saw an opportunity to build and run another dominant race car when the FIA created the first GT Championship, which allowed for large-displacement GT1 cars that required a minimum homologation of a mere 25 examples.

2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Roadster (Neil Fraser ©2023 Courtesy of RM Sotheby’s)

Thus the CLK GTR was born on a lightning-fast schedule to compete in the 1997 racing season. Built with an aluminum honeycomb frame mounted with carbon-fiber body panels, the mid/rear-engine monocoque chassis cradled an evolution of the Mercedes S-Class’ 6.0-liter V12, which sent 592 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque through a six-speed sequential transmission. The CLK GTR race car could hit 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds on the way to a 205-mph top end.

(©2023 Courtesy of RM Sotheby’s)

More crucially, it could win races, so many so that the CLK GTR took back-to-back FIA GT Driver’s and Constructors’ Championships in 1997 and 1998. Even with this success, Mercedes only built 26 roadgoing Strassenversion models to adhere to FIA’s 25-car homologation requirement. The roadgoing versions were mechanically almost identical to their racecar counterparts, save for an increase in engine displacement to 6.9 liters, which upped output to 622 horsepower and 539 pound-feet of torque, as well creature comforts like an AC, an audio system and upholstery options.

1999 Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Coupe (©2023 Courtesy of RM Sotheby’s)

Only six of the 26 CLK GTRs were topless Roadster variants built after the Coupes’ production run. And the third of six CLK GTR Roadsters produced is the one seen here, chassis 000034, finished in silver paint over a black and gray leather interior and showing just 25 kilometers (16 miles) on the odometer.

The other CLK GTR on offer is a Coupe from the 1999 model year finished in silver over a blue-gray tartan gabardine fabric cockpit—a reference to the 1955 Mille Miglia-winning 300 SLR racecar of Sir Stirling Moss and navigator Denis Jenkinson. With 7,015 kilometers (4,538 miles) on the odometer, it’s expected to bring between $8 and $9 million.

The Mercedes-Benz ‘Vision One-Eleven’ Electrifies A 1970s Icon https://www.maxim.com/rides/the-mercedes-benz-vision-one-eleven-electrifies-a-1970s-icon/ Mon, 19 Jun 2023 07:43:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=210846 While the Mercedes Vision EQXX and its sportier AMG-crafted counterpart are relatively grounded concepts for a very possible near-future, the latest project from the German marque’s forward-thinking Vision division is truly something else.

(Mercedes-Benz)

Mercedes disciples immediately recognized the Vision One-Eleven for what it is: a futurized version of the 70s-era Mercedes C111 series of rotary engine-powered concepts. Road & Track notes that the wedge shape, gullwing doors, and orange coloring hark back to the experimental C111 rides.

The front end is also a reinterpretation of the “shark nose” front end found on sports cars from a bygone era, which were marked by an aggressively forward lean. But elsewhere, the One-Eleven takes some drastic turns.

(Mercedes-Benz)

It’s autonomous, for one, hence the carefree Lounge mode that puts the seats in a laid-back position (a Race mode gives occupants a better view of the road).

The all-electric powertrain features a single, cutting-edge axial flux motor engineered by the Mercedes-owned British company YASA. While no specs were offered, axial-flux type motors are far-and-away superior in power-to-weight ratios than the radial-flux motors used in today’s EVs.

(Mercedes-Benz)

“In an axial-flux motor, the electromagnetic flow runs parallel to the motor’s rotational axis, which is highly efficient,” YASA CTO Tim Woolmer said in a statement.

“In a radial-flux motor, the flow runs perpendicular to the rotational axis. Compared to radial-flux motors, they have considerably higher and more enduring power reserves, which delivers a whole new level of performance.”

(Mercedes-Benz)

The original C111’s honeycomb grille has been replaced by a grid of tiny squares that sits in front of pixel-style headlights and is illuminated by a white LED bezel. Meanwhile, blue lighting along the rear wheels is visible from both interior and exterior.

The only piece of the Mercedes One-Eleven that will definitely carry over to production vehicles is the axial-flux motor. But it sure is fun to fancy.

Why This Classic Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster Could Sell For Millions https://www.maxim.com/rides/why-this-classic-mercedes-benz-300-sl-roadster-could-sell-for-millions/ Thu, 23 Mar 2023 11:08:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=204259
(Darin Schnabel ©2023 Courtesy of RM Sotheby’s)

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL coupe, with its eye-catching gullwing doors, gets lots of well-deserved love. But its topless roadster successor is also a holy-grail rarity that commands similarly eye-watering prices.

That’s especially true when one is presented in exceptional condition, such as this fully restored 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster that’s on sale at RM Sotheby’s.

(Darin Schnabel ©2023 Courtesy of RM Sotheby’s)

After the luxury German automaker concluded a run of 1,400 Mercedes-Benz 300SL hard-tops based on the W198 I-gen platform in 1957, 1,858 W198 II-gen soft-tops with better chassis and an oversteer-reducing trailing-arm suspension were produced through 1963.

Each was equipped with a four-speed manual transmission and 2.9-liter straight-six, which was canted at a 45 degree angle to allow for more aerodynamic styling. The vehicle could hit 60 mph in seven seconds flat—a full four-tenths of a second quicker than originally expected—while top speed was estimated to be 140 mph.

(Darin Schnabel ©2023 Courtesy of RM Sotheby’s)

Those figures shouldn’t be a problem for this particular example, which was recently restored by a world-class 300 SL specialist who brought everything from the engine to the original silver-over-red leather colorway back to the life. RM Sotheby’s has more on the job:

Entrusting the 300 SL Roadster to Rudi Koniczek of Rudi & Company in Victoria, BC—a world renowned 300 SL specialist—the car was stripped to bare metal and found to be in excellent condition.

It received all-new rubber, European-specification headlights, new taillight lenses, and all-new glass, while the original trim was rechromed to show standard. During the restoration, it was confirmed that the Roadster retained its original chassis, engine, body, transmission, front axles, and rear differential.

(Darin Schnabel ©2023 Courtesy of RM Sotheby’s)

The original engine and gearbox were fully rebuilt, utilizing only factory-correct components supplied by Mercedes-Benz Classic. Refinished in its original colors, the car was test-driven for 300 miles and before being subject to an additional service to ensure it ran and drove as new.

Finally, the car is accompanied by a Becker Mexico radio, tool roll, tire iron and jack, a set of soft-top head guards, and a set of fitted luggage trimmed in 1079 red leather by Taris Charysyn & Co.

While this 300 SL Roadster may not have starry provenance of this 300 SL Gullwing that inspired an Andy Warhol artwork, its history is nonetheless interesting.

Though built to U.S. specifications, this car is believed to have been originally delivered to one Lieutenant Browder in Kaiserslautern, Germany. Economic growth was slow after WWII in the southwestern German city, which had been bombed heavily by Allied forces. In 1952, a U.S. garrison was established to help revive Kaiserslautern. Records indicate Lieutenant Browder was stationed there when he ordered the vehicle.

Mercedes-Maybach Launches Its First-Ever Plug-In Hybrid https://www.maxim.com/rides/mercedes-maybach-launches-its-first-ever-plug-in-hybrid/ Tue, 14 Feb 2023 22:11:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=202490

Only two short years after Mercedes-Maybach launched its first S-Class—and eight years since Daimler incorporated Maybach into Mercedes-Benz in 2015—the German marque’s pure luxury brand is going electric its first hybrid offering.

“With our first plug-in hybrid model, we are combining the luxury experience typical of Maybach with emission-free local driving when in electric driving mode,” Daniel Lescow, Head of Mercedes‑Maybach at Mercedes‑Benz Group AG, says of the new S 580e.

“The Mercedes‑Maybach S 580e represents a pivotal step in the transformation of our heritage brand into an electric future. We will present our first fully electric model as early as 2023.”

While hybrids are more environmentally friendly that combustion-powered counterparts, the decision to electrify the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class was made in the pursuit of silence. All manufacturers of chauffeur’s cars, including Rolls-Royce and Bentley, aim to make the cabin as quiet as possible.

When driven on pure electricity for up to 62 miles, the Mercedes-Maybach S 580e’s makes almost no noise, the brand promises. The faint whir of the electric motors will likely be the only audible tell that one’s in motion.

When performance is the foremost objective, the S 580e offers a combined 510 horsepower, the bulk of which comes from the standard S 580’s straight-six. Even at a weight approaching 5,000 pounds, it’ll hit 62 mph in brisk 5.1 seconds on the way to 155 mph.

Being a plug-in hybrid, the battery can also be recharged in just 30 minutes when paired with a 60 kW DC fast charger, while other cool “electric-specific” features include a concealed charging socket on the left side of the vehicle and blue color accents in the headlights and battery charging indicators.

The Mercedes-Maybach S 580e will be available in Chinese markets first before heading to Europe. Whether it will make it stateside will be revealed closer to the car’s full unveiling later this year.
