Luxury watchmaker H. Moser & Cie. officially unveiled the Streamliner Tourbillon Pierre Gasly at the Singapore Grand Prix, a timepiece designed in collaboration with the celebrated Formula 1 driver. The watch, a blend of high-end horology and contemporary sporting style, is described by the company as capturing the driver’s vision and aesthetic.

The project was “deeply personal” for Gasly, a French driver who competes in F1 for Alipine. He aided in the design from choosing textures and signing off on the watch’s refined appearance to positioning the tourbillon as its central mechanism.  “More than lending his name, he shaped every detail of this watch, meticulously selecting textures, defining its pared-back elegance, and ensuring the tourbillon would serve as its heart,” according to H. Moser. “The result is a timepiece that feels like an extension of Pierre himself: bold, refined, and unmistakably unique.”

(H. Moser)

Gasly went with a rich chocolate fumé dial, reflecting his preference for understated tones. This is contrasted with the strong, contemporary presence of the 5N red gold Streamliner case. On the bracelet version, a discreet ruby is set at the ten o’clock position on the bracelet, a subtle reference to Gasly’s racing number.

(H. Moser)

The Streamliner Tourbillon Pierre Gasly is available in two limited editions: A sport-chic edition on a chocolate rubber strap, limited to 100 pieces, is priced at $98,500. A collector’s edition on a red gold bracelet with the ruby detail, limited to 10 pieces, is priced at $148,500. The 10 future owners of the full gold version will receive a helmet replica and can participate in a yet-to-be-determined activity with Gasly in 2026.

Audemars Piguet Celebrates 150th Anniversary With All-New Royal Oak RD#5 https://www.maxim.com/style/audemars-piguet-celebrates-150th-anniversary-with-all-new-royal-oak-rd5/ Thu, 02 Oct 2025 10:30:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=273160
(Audemars Piguet)

Audemars Piguet continues to raise the bar as it toasts an illustrious milestone, and while its lineup is plenty eye-catching on its own, the inner specifications of a new Audemars Piguet watch consistently raise the bar, as is the case with its newest Royal Oak timepiece.

Audemars Piguet watches tend to set the pace in the luxury world, at least as far as an impressive blend of bold looks and precise craftsmanship is concerned (there’s a reason Jay-Z, among others, is a fan of the company’s wrist candy). The company notes that with its latest release, “simple is complicated,” and so while its textured dial and visually appealing case might strike the same chord as other Audemars Piguet watches, the end result offers more than meets the eye.

(Audemars Piguet)

To be more specific: The new Jumbo Extra-Thin Selfwinding Tourbillon Chronograph RD #5 150th Anniversary does the nearly impossible by taking the Royal Oak silhouette and then retooling it with an inner movement that manages to blend both a flyback chronograph and flying tourbillon construction in an impossibly small package.

(Audemars Piguet)

Accordingly, just 150 units worldwide are available when it comes to the suitably rare timepiece, which Audemars Piguet says “marks a new era of complications, offering a balance of lightness, durability, and brilliance.” The company notably toasted its 150th anniversary with a new green ceramic Royal Oak Offshore this spring, among a suite of other covetable and ultra-exclusive releases. Of this new edition, Bulk Metallic Glass makes up the caseback and bezel, while the sleek 39mm titanium case delivers imperceptible thinness and utterly chic style.

(Audemars Piguet)

The trademark cushioned geometric AP Royal Oak case is offset by a striking blue “Petite Tapisserie” dial in equally recognizable Audemars Piguet fashion. Its hour markers and its 18-carat white gold luminescent bathtub hands also stand out in handsome and elegant fashion alongside a refined AP script logo. An integrated titanium bracelet finishes off the remarkably rare timepiece in streamlined style, and is another sort of Audemars Piguet signature.

(Audemars Piguet)

That the watch manages to look and feel as thin on the wrist seems to be a testament to Audemars Piguet ingenuity, while its dual functionality is also exceptionally difficult to pull off at a such a small scale in terms of thickness (the dial is just 8.1mm thick). The all-new Calibre 1800 achieves a degree of precision that’s not to be overlooked.

As the watchmaker says, the new Jumbo Extra-Thin Selfwinding Tourbillon Chronograph RD#5 150th Anniversary succeeds at “combining technical sophistication, performance and iconic design with a new standard of ergonomic refinement.” As one might expect, pricing information is available upon request for the stunning new Audemars Piguet Royal Oak achievement.

Hublot Expands Spirit of Big Bang Tourbillon Collection with 4 New Ceramic Colors https://www.maxim.com/style/hublot-expands-spirit-of-big-bang-tourbillon-collection-with-4-new-ceramic-colors/ Thu, 02 Oct 2025 09:00:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=273045
(Hublot)

Hublot has officially expanded its Spirit of Big Bang Tourbillon 5-Day Power Reserve collection with the release of four new ceramic color options: red, black, yellow, and sky blue. The debut marks a significant extension of the line, which had previously only been available in white ceramic or carbon. The move, according to the luxury watchmaker, demonstrates its determination to reach all Spirit of Big Bang enthusiasts.

Born in 2014, the Spirit of Big Bang collection is known for its tonneau profile, structured design, and airy aesthetic. The new 42 mm models embody this spirit, carrying over signature design codes such as a skeleton movement, a bezel with six screws, a crown with a rubber grip, and a multi-layer case construction. Each of the four ceramic color editions is highly limited, with only 20 pieces available per model.

Collectors can choose from the new quartet of bright colors, each housing the HUB6020 manual movement. Specifically developed for the tonneau-shaped case, the movement features a tourbillon visible at 6 o’clock, a complication that enhances precision by compensating for the earth’s gravity. The caliber also boasts an off-center hour and minute dial at 3 o’clock and a power reserve indicator at 8 o’clock. The power reserve is extended to five days, one of the longest autonomies for this type of complication. The 100% Manufacture caliber is notable for its extreme skeletonization, a technical feat that hollowing out components to the very limits of their strength.

To celebrate the launch of these four colored ceramic models — which are joined by a fifth model in black sapphire, also limited to 20 pieces and priced at $161,000 — Hublot is unveiling a first-ever customization experience. New owners of one of the four limited-series ceramic models will receive their timepiece accompanied by two straps, one rubber and one velcro.

They will also receive a third bracelet and an additional bezel, chosen from an exclusive range of some 20 possible variants in different colors and materials, including carbon, ceramic, and optional stone-setting. Combined with the One Click interchangeable bracelet system, these options offer a high degree of personalization.

Julien Tornare, CEO of Hublot, noted the special place the Spirit of Big Bang Tourbillon holds with collectors. “The tonneau format is rarely a first acquisition. It requires a certain amount of watchmaking experience, which we are taking a step further today with these colored ceramic variants,” Tornare said.

Each of the four ceramic Spirit of Big Bang Tourbillon 5-Day Power Reserve models—Red Magic, Black Magic, Yellow Magic, and Sky Blue Ceramic—is priced at $104,000 each.

The idea that one can snap your fingers and be transported to a different locale entirely is an intoxicating prospect, but the new Shinola Hotel City to Shore Travel Experience is about as close as one can get to an instantaneous change of pace.

Arriving just in time for peak fall leaf-peeping, the exclusive travel package brings together the lovely tranquility of Northern Michigan’s recently opened Otis Harbor Springs alongside the mix of Motor City grit and modern refinement that is the Shinola Hotel, as Maxim found out during an exclusive visit to both properties earlier this season.

(Shinola Hotel)

Both share a curious, highly stylish throughline in terms of handsome design DNA: Former Shinola Creative Director Daniel Caudill was at the helm of the Otis Harbor Springs, as well as the impeccable Shinola Hotel, which brings the illustrious Detroit watch brand’s vision to life in stunning clarity. Complete with a Shinola boutique in the hotel and access within minutes to the company’s Cass Corridor HQ and production facility, you could very well say that the Shinola Hotel is the most stylish property in Detroit. Now, it has a northern Michigan partner to match in the Otis Harbor Springs.

(Shinola Hotel)

Available now for $2,400 plus taxes and fees across select fall dates, the Shinola Hotel City to Shore Travel Experience sees lucky travelers start their journey across the lovely autumnal scenes of Pure Michigan with two nights in Detroit at the hip boutique hotel. To kick off a prime fall weekend, guests then embark on a self-guided journey north to Harbor Springs for a two-night stay at the revamped, luxe Otis Harbor Springs. At the Otis, custom furnishings, Flamingo Estate grooming products and a chic outlook on Mid-Century Modern design speak to Caudill’s vision for a fashionable and yet heritage-minded update to a long-running motor lodge.

(Shinola Hotel)

The experience kicks off in elevated fashion, bringing visitors into an elegant Shinola Hotel Cass King room. Each property is offering $100 in dining credits, plus breakfast for up to two guests. It’s as if each property thought of every carefully considered detail, then improved upon even that high bar for hospitality.

(Shinola Hotel Watch Lending Program/Courtesy of the Shinola Hotel)

In addition to prime access to buzzing Motor City culture (and the hotel’s excellent San Morello restaurant), the Shinola Hotel watch lending program is an astoundingly cool draw for guests who stay in suites on the property. The VIP personalized concierge visit gives you the chance to select your choice of a luxury Shinola timepiece during your stay. To say that Shinola watches add some wrist game flair alongside an Old Fashioned is an understatement. There are even rarities like Shinola’s Petoskey stone dial watch available through the program: Putting a covetable Shinola watch on one’s wrist only heightens the entire experience.

(Otis Harbor Springs)

Guests at the Shinola Hotel are also encouraged to visit the property’s speakeasy-esque Evening Bar, where cocktails like the Spirited Away (a rich and sumptuous blend of rye and cognac, plus a smoky hint Scotch and a dash of honey) are especially delectable.

(San Morello/Courtesy of the Shinola Hotel)

San Morello’s rich, elevated Italian-American cuisine also serves as hearty sustenance ahead of an evening exploring Detroit’s many delights on foot. The property’s culinary offering includes more casual fare, like tantalizing fried chicken at Penny Red’s or refreshing steins of beer at The Brakeman.

(Otis Harbor Springs)

The same meticulous attention to detail can be found further north after one’s journey to the bucolic, revamped motor lodge at the Otis Harbor Springs. Set across 10 acres and boasting a “long-spanning legacy of Mid-Century Modern design,” the Fireplace Lounge is an utterly cozy, luxe-meets-rustic place for a round of cocktails.

(Otis Harbor Springs)

Complete with its original stone fireplace and sturdy wooden beams, the Fireplace Lounge boasts a visitor-favorite Otis Fashioned (a buttery blend of maple, rye spice and walnut bitters), while the About Last Night delivers the spice of mezcal and habanero with a cutting touch of floral blanco. Seasonal cocktails and small plates deliver suitably premium, utterly delicious variety for a weekend visit, and the bar’s mixology team says the destination is even popular among locals.

(Otis Harbor Springs)

The property blends rich and warm tones with a considered take on Mid-Century Modern design, with one story of 31 exclusive rooms set around an inner courtyard complete with lawn games and prime access to a series of lovely rolling meadows. In nearby Harbor Springs, perfectly classic autumnal Michigan pursuits await, from blazing lakeside sunsets to vibrant dining at NOMAD Harbor Springs (don’t miss out on its spritz menu, boasting Fernet, CYNAR and more).

(Shinola Hotel)

For those who crave the modern style of the Shinola Hotel (and the chance to try a Shinola watch on for size), the new Shinola Hotel City to Shore Travel Experience is a prime introduction to the famed brand. And just in time for gorgeous fall foliage, the program’s offerings at Otis Harbor Springs couldn’t be more perfectly suited. Book your Pure Michigan getaway now, and be on the lookout for future partnerships between the two premium properties.

Jake Paul Flaunts $5 Million ‘Emerald Billionaire III’ Watch At Miami Press Conference Hyping Gervonta Davis Fight https://www.maxim.com/style/jake-paul-flaunts-5-million-emerald-billionaire-iii-watch-at-press-conference-hyping-gervonta-davis-fight/ Thu, 25 Sep 2025 11:00:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=272596

How’s this for a knockout timepiece: Jake Paul flexed a $5 million Jacob & Co. Emerald Billionaire III watch at the press conference promoting his controversial Netflix fight with Gervonta Davis.

The emerald-studded watch is a gaudy tour de force of horology and jewelry. It’s a “pièce unique,” meaning it’s a one-of-a-kind creation that won’t be duplicated. The Emerald Billionaire III is powered by an exclusive Jacob & Co. skeleton manual winding caliber, the JCAM39, featuring a tourbillon.

(Photo Credit: Getty Images/Courtesy of Jacob & Co.)

However, the true spectacle is its dazzling exterior. The 54 x 40mm case, crafted from 18K white gold, is a canvas for 714 emerald-cut emeralds, totaling an astounding 147 carats. The gems are meticulously set across the case frame, inner ring, bridges, and even the crown, creating an uninterrupted cascade of glittering green fire. The bracelet is also 18K white gold, fully paved with 504 of the emeralds.

(Jacob & Co.)

The bold choice of wrist candy only served to add more curiosity to Paul’s strange matchup with Davis, which is scheduled for November 14 at the Kaseya Center in Miami, and will be streamed live on Netflix. The bout, which is being billed as a 10-round exhibition with a 195-pound catchweight, has drawn criticism from boxing fans and commentators due to the massive size difference between the two fighters.

(Photo Credit: Getty Images /Courtesy of Jacob & Co.)

Paul, who typically fights at around 200 pounds, will be facing Davis, a multiple-weight world champion who campaigns at a far lighter 135 pounds. Paul, at 6-1, also notably towered over Davis, 5-5 ½, at the press conference. The fight was moved to Miami after a standoff with the Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission, which raised concerns over fighter safety.

But the fight rules, as announced September 23 by Paul’s business partner Nakisa Bidarian, reveal few accommodations for the size difference between the fighters. The bout will be contested at a maximum of 195 pounds, knockouts will be allowed, official judges will score the fight, and 12-ounce gloves will be used.

Andy Foster, executive director of the California State Athletic Commission, told USA Today that Paul’s latest stunt fight does not exactly sound like an exhibition match. “It’s not great,” he said, and of the weight discrepancy between the two boxers, he added, “It’s concerning.”

Paul has a professional record of 9-1, including a decision victory in his Netflix fight against a 58-year-old Mike Tyson, who was battling health problems and had retired from the ring nearly two decades before the bout. Davis is undefeated at 30-0, but his last fight, with Lamont Roach in March, was scored a majority draw. Davis retained his lightweight title belt, but many observers thought Roach deserved to win a narrow decision.

The Paul/Davis fight will not count toward either boxer’s professional record, but ringside judges will be present to determine a winner. In the meantime, Paul’s watch game has apparently already scored a victory for over-the-top wrist wear.

Jacob & Co. And Costa Design Unveil ‘The Godfather’-Inspired Sculpture Table https://www.maxim.com/style/jacob-co-and-costa-design-unveil-godfather-sculpture-table-a-cinematic-stunner-of-horological-art/ Wed, 24 Sep 2025 11:00:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=272353
(Jacob & Co.)

In a groundbreaking collaboration that redefines the intersection of design and horology, luxury watchmaker Jacob & Co. and Costa Design Studio have unveiled a head-turning new collector’s item: The Godfather Sculpture Table. This limited-edition creation, a functional work of art, draws its inspiration from the revered Opera Godfather timepiece, transforming its intricate details into a monumental piece of furniture.

Conceptualized by visionary designer Pedro Costa, the table serves as an extraordinary expression of collaborative artistry. It is a true union of cinematic history, high-end watchmaking, and sculptural design, built with a meticulous attention to detail that mirrors the craftsmanship of its horological muse. The table is composed of over 350 individual parts, each hand-assembled into seven distinct substructures. These components are crafted from a high-end blend of stainless steel, glass, leather, and aluminum, resulting in a robust yet elegant creation weighing 170 kilograms and measuring 135 x 80 x 76 cm.

(Jacob & Co.)

At the heart of the sculpture lies a Swiss and German mechanical movement, a tribute to the table’s watchmaking origins. This complex mechanism boasts a 7-day power reserve, providing both a functional and artistic core. Echoing the watch that inspired it, the table also features intricate music boxes that play the iconic “The Godfather” theme by Nino Rota, adding a multi-sensory dimension to the piece. The design further incorporates scaled-up elements from the timepiece, including detailed violin- and piano-shaped parts and a tri-axial tourbillon, showcasing the seamless fusion of engineering and artistic design.

(Jacob & Co.)

The Godfather Sculpture Table is limited to just 20 pieces worldwide, solidifying its status as a collector’s item. This bold collaboration allows Jacob & Co.’s unparalleled storytelling to converge with Costa Design’s sculptural mastery, creating a uniquely functional piece of art that’s sure to be a conversation piece.

(Jacob & Co.)

The table is available to buy at a very exclusive price point of $300,000. Just when Godfather-loving watch aficionados thought they were out, Jacob & Co. are apparently pulling them back in.

This Ruby-Studded Rolex Daytona From Artisans De Geneve Is A Custom Classic https://www.maxim.com/style/this-ruby-studded-rolex-daytona-from-artisans-de-geneve-is-a-customized-classic/ Tue, 23 Sep 2025 11:09:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=272239 If you thought it was tricky to get your hands on a new Rolex, try the latest from Artisans de Geneve on for size: The preferred horological outpost of the likes of Lenny Kravitz, Spike Lee and soccer legend Andrea Pirlo just dropped a stunning, wildly expensive custom red ruby Rolex Daytona.

(Artisans de Geneve)

The truly one-of-one timepiece builds off the white gold Rolex Daytona base model ref. 116509, which has been “creatively modified” by the craftsmen at the company’s Geneva headquarters for a mysterious solo client. Of course, the timepiece received an astounding valuation, given its rarity and its use of 36 “pigeon blood” natural, loupe-clean rubies: It’s worth an eye-popping $555,000.

(Artisans de Geneve)

The Ruby Rolex Daytona x Artisans de Geneve already makes use of the world-famous Daytona watch design before ramping up the luster significantly, as a whopping 52 diamonds dot the case and a red sapphire dial adorns the elegant timepiece (a first-of-its-kind dial design by Artisans de Geneve). The hands and rotor are machined from refined solid white gold, while the oscillating weight gets a red enamel motif in a nod to the color symbolizing eternity.

(Artisans de Geneve)

To say every detail is carefully considered in exquisite fashion is no doubt an understatement, and one can’t help but wonder (with great curiosity) the Artisans de Geneve client who commissioned such a striking timepiece (although the company notes he’s a man with “highly demanding tastes”). In a release shared through Artisans de Geneve, the buyer noted “I wanted a watch that reflected my passion for my favorite color,” adding that “I asked for the best, from stones and settings to the most complex techniques, without compromising on understated elegance.”

(Artisans de Geneve)

The “truly remarkable” experience  reflected “meticulous attention to every detail,” the fortunate client said of working with Artisans de Geneve, which doesn’t represent one particular brand but works on a variety of customization programs and truly masterful timepieces.

The independent watch workshop and customization company says there were inherent challenges in working with rubies on the bezel, all the while delivering its first-ever red sapphire dial. The atelier says it “embodies the fusion between people and watchmaking,” a sentiment on full display with this jaw-dropping watch (or is it a work of art?).

(Artisans de Geneve)

In this instance, the Rolex Daytona is souped up in other ways, boasting a hand-crafted, skeletonized Caliber 4139 movement. Watch enthusiasts will note that the Daytona normally isn’t delivered in skeletonized fashion, among other ways this custom ruby red Rolex Daytona stands apart in the horological world. While only one lucky client will add this otherworldly watch to their collection, it’s a fine example of the difference the right horologists can lend to a legendary silhouette like the Rolex Daytona.

Ulysse Nardin Unveils Limited-Edition Green Blast Timepiece Honoring Silicon Technology https://www.maxim.com/style/ulysse-nardin-unveils-limited-edition-green-blast-timepiece-honoring-silicon-technology/ Tue, 23 Sep 2025 09:15:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=272253
(Ulysse Nardin)

Ulysse Nardin, the Swiss watchmaker known for its horological innovations, has introduced a new, U.S.-exclusive timepiece that pays homage to the dual nature of silicon in modern technology. The Blast [Free Wheel Marquetry Silicon Green] is a limited-edition watch that merges the brand’s mechanical prowess with artistic craftsmanship, celebrating silicon’s role in both advanced watchmaking and the semiconductor industry.

The centerpiece of this new model is its striking dial, which features hand-crafted marquetry composed of 103 individually cut slivers of monocrystalline silicon. The segments, some matte and others polished for added depth, create a mosaic of emerald green and silver-gray. This color scheme is a deliberate nod to the intricate aesthetics of printed circuit boards, where anything-but-stylish silicon chips are the core components. Ulysse Nardin, a pioneer in using silicon in watch movements, has developed the rare technology to produce the material in vibrant colors, with green chosen specifically to evoke the hue of circuit boards.

(Ulysse Nardin)

“This watch is a testament to our ongoing mission to push the boundaries of traditional watchmaking,” said Ulysse Nardin in a statement announcing the watch. “We’ve taken a material celebrated for its practical properties—low friction, resistance to temperature and magnetism—and transformed it into an artistic medium, creating a watch that is both technically advanced and visually captivating.”

Beyond its unique dial, the Blast [Free Wheel Marquetry Silicon Green] is a marvel of high horology. It is powered by the in-house caliber UN-176, a manual-winding movement with a flying tourbillon at the six o’clock position. This movement features Ulysse Nardin’s Anchor escapement, which uses silicon blades to deliver constant force, ensuring consistent performance as the mainspring winds down. The UN-176 also boasts an impressive seven-day power reserve, a notable achievement for a manually wound movement.

(Ulysse Nardin)

Ulysse Nardin was one of the first watchmakers to integrate silicon components into its movements with the release of the Freak in 2001. Since then, the brand has been at the forefront of the industry’s embrace of the material, which offers superior performance and reduced need for lubrication compared to traditional metal parts. The watch is housed in a 45mm case made from 18K white gold, with a box-style sapphire crystal that provides a multi-angled view of the complex movement. With its contemporary architecture, the case is designed to showcase the caliber UN-176 and its intricate silicon marquetry dial.

Limited to just 10 pieces, the Ulysse Nardin Blast [Free Wheel Marquetry Silicon Green] is available for $105,700.

Rolex Celebrates The Oyster Perpetual Datejust In A Collectible Coffee Table Book https://www.maxim.com/style/rolex-celebrates-the-oyster-perpetual-datejust-in-a-collectible-coffee-table-book/ Fri, 19 Sep 2025 08:30:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=271895 There are timepieces that need no introduction, and timepieces that require a second look: The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust is one and the same. It’s being toasted accordingly in a striking new tome from magazine publisher Wallpaper*, all the better for watch enthusiasts who simply can’t get enough.

(Rolex/Wallpaper*)

The latest volume on the legendary watchmaker’s most striking creations joins Oyster Perpetual Submariner – The Watch That Unlocked The Deep, released last fall to great fanfare as the first-ever authorized Rolex book. An icon in measures of status, performance and luxury, the Datejust timepiece has proven nearly without compare since its 1945 debut. In proper fashion, the story of the groundbreaking Oyster Perpetual Datejust goes to great lengths to illustrate its origins and its enduring status in a luxurious, coffee table-approved package.

(Rolex/Wallpaper*)

The Oyster Perpetual Datejust arrived as a self-winding, waterproof chronometer with an impossibly elegant and sleek design to match, befitting the times. It’s now available with a fitting companion tome billed by design publisher Wallpaper* as a “lavishly produced book” that now serves as the “definitive history of the Oyster Perpetual Datejust.” Naturally, it boasts official Rolex historical imagery and text from horology expert Nicholas Foulkes across 224 pages in hardcover format.

(Rolex/Wallpaper*)

The tome celebrates the refinement and yet approachability of the timepiece for both men and women, noting its illustrious placement on the wrists of artists, athletes and icons. The timepiece even helped solidify the signature Rolex 3-o’clock date window as part of what the publisher calls its “sophisticated design and unassailable capability.”

The horology expert and historian Foulkes also penned the release of the silk-bound Submariner edition from Wallpaper* last fall. The ultra-premium new volume nods to the Rolex legacy in fitting fashion, said Wallpaper* Editor-In-Chief Bill Prince. The publisher notes “the Datejust became not only a symbol of worldly success, but a partner in life for all those committed to achieving their goals.” For those interested in a companion volume to pair with a legendary watch, pre-orders are available online now for about $136 via Wallpaper* until September 29th.

Exclusive First Look: Hodinkee & Nivada Grenchen Collaborate On Retro-Inspired Antarctic GMT https://www.maxim.com/style/exclusive-first-look-hodinkee-nivada-grenchen-collaborate-on-retro-inspired-antarctic-gmt/ Thu, 18 Sep 2025 15:00:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=271943
(Nivada Grenchen Antarctic GMT Limited Edition for Hodinkee)

Hodinkee, the cult-favorite media platform covering all things watches, has once again joined forces with a historic brand to bring back a classic timepiece. Teaming up with the revived Swiss watchmaker Nivada Grenchen, they’re releasing their first limited-edition collaboration: the Nivada Grenchen Antarctic GMT Limited Edition for Hodinkee, and Maxim has the exclusive first look.

This special release takes direct inspiration from a rare 1960s Nivada Grenchen Antarctic GMT, a vintage piece that was recently featured and sold in the Hodinkee Shop. It’s so rare, in fact, that the one in Hodinkee’s shop is one of the only known examples to have come to market. The new watch is a modern, go-anywhere update of that classic design, featuring a subtle gray motif, upgraded sapphire crystal, and increased water resistance.

(Nivada Grenchen Antarctic GMT Limited Edition for Hodinkee)

The new watch carries a thoroughly modern, Hodinkee-tweaked design, building on the motifs from the “Grey Glow” exclusives. High-contrast design changes simplify the look and make for a more robust, go-anywhere watch. At a modest 36mm in diameter and 40mm lug-to-lug, the watch is a perfect fit for a variety of wrists. What stays the same as the original is the reliable, automatic, and self-winding SOPROD C125 movement, with 42 hours of power reserve and a frequency of 4Hz. That’s where the similarities end, as Hodinkee has made some critical upgrades. The crown at 2 o’clock adjusts the 24-hour rotating inner bezel, while the crown at 4 o’clock independently adjusts the GMT hand and date in the first position, and the 12-hour time in the second.

(Nivada Grenchen Antarctic GMT Limited Edition for Hodinkee)

Guillaume Laidet, Co-Founder and Chief Brand Officer of the newly revived Nivada Grenchen, points to that vintage reference as the direct inspiration for the resurrection of the Antarctic GMT line. “For me, this limited edition represents a true milestone,” says Laidet. “The Hodinkee Shop was actually the very first retailer to carry Nivada. I am, therefore, especially proud of this limited edition and of this fruitful collaboration.”

(Nivada Grenchen Antarctic GMT Limited Edition for Hodinkee)

Most importantly, the crystal has been upgraded to scratch-resistant sapphire, which doubles the water resistance from 50 to 100 meters, a feature exclusive to Hodinkee’s Limited Edition and more in line with the Antarctic’s hard-wearing history. On the dial, you’ll notice that the full Nivada Grenchen logo is on display at 12 o’clock, while a modest “AUTOMATIC GMT” completes the look on the bottom half. Forgoing the script “Antarctic” altogether, the resulting look is perfectly balanced. Nearly every part of the watch that is white, including the applied writing, the inner GMT bezel, and the handset, is finished in Super-LumiNova, which glows bright green in low light.

The case has been equally considered. The top portion is vertically brushed, as opposed to the polished finish of the mainline Antarctic GMT. This ties the Hodinkee version to the original brushed compressor case supplied by Ervin Piquerez S.A. (EPSA). The case thickness is a svelte 11.1mm, a nearly 2mm reduction from the original’s 12.75mm. The caseback offers a further nod to the vintage example, with a stainless steel penguin engraving on a steel medallion instead of gold. The watch is completed with two strap options: a hard-wearing gray NATO and an equally robust gray suede-leather strap.
