Recently, a mansion made splashy headlines the world over for its record-breaking purchase. And while you might think the draw would be the $55 million that architect and developer Aldo Stark of Prestige Design Homes earned from its sale, it’s actually the abode’s opulent Ferrari-themed design that dropped jaws. Casa Maranello, as it’s so eloquently named, is not only an ode to lavish living, but to the Italian supercar maker whose identity ripples through the DNA of the 2.5- acre lakefront campus like the crimson flags flown by Ferraristi the world over.

(Mike Ruiz/Legendary Productions)

The Prancing Horse obsession starts as soon as you pass the gates and walk by an expansive fountain at the home’s entrance. Floating on the pool-like water, a defiant horse rears on its hind legs—a life-size Ferrari logo fully manifested in bronze. Walk through the imposing front double doors to the grand salon and you’ll see a replica of one of the planet’s most valuable cars centerstage. There in the room’s pole position, a reduced scale Ferrari 250 Testarossa reminds all who enter the abode where its name was born (the Italian city being, of course, the home of Ferrari).

(Mike Ruiz/Legendary Productions)

From that vantage, you can also catch a view of Casa Maranello’s focal point: the 12-car garage, outfitted in photos with a lust-worthy suite of gleaming Ferraris—and a lone Rolls-Royce Phantom. Unfortunately, none of these vehicles are included in the sale, but that’s OK. The glass-walled garage allows the proud owner to park his own collection for stunned onlookers to enjoy from the comforts of the living room, viewed behind glass like an adult-size Hot Wheels collection.

(Mike Ruiz/Legendary Productions)

While Italy plays prime muse, its Douglas Elliman agency states the home was “inspired by European artistry and precision.” And that inspiration emanates not just from Italy but also Switzerland—specifically the iconic “Goldfinger Route,” aka the Swiss Alps’ Furka Pass through which Sean Connery escapes the titular Goldfinger’s goons in his Aston Martin DB5. Located in what is humbly dubbed “Billionaire’s Row” in the prestigious Stone Creek Ranch development of Delray Beach, Florida, Casa Maranello is clearly built with one focus in mind: revelry. But beyond the ample hosting capabilities of the 21,725-squarefoot mansion lies a profound ability to relax, recharge, and meditate.

Casa Maranello was not merely paid for via cash, but was partly swapped for a nearby $26 million mansion. Like trading baseball cards, but for the G800 crowd.

(Mike Ruiz/Legendary Productions)

Despite its hefty price tag, Casa Maranello seems not to have been imagined as a first home, but rather more of a Miami party pad. Small hints to its festive purpose abound: the 20-person Brazilian onyx dining table in the dining room, crystal chandelier-festooned high-ceilings, and a marble-lined 30-foot-long cocktail lounge dubbed the Maranello Bar all seem to suggest Casa Maranello might be more of an afters-at-mine destination for one of Magic City’s sports superstars. Perhaps the perfect pad for Tua Tagovailoa or Bam Adebayo to call home.

Should any of your new friends want to sleep over, the halfdozen bedroom suites, including a pair of primary suites, supply five-star resort levels of comfort. Each boasts walk-in closets and en-suite spa level bathrooms. For your other playmates, you can offer four well-appointed guest suites which still ensure both lavish style and privacy in case anyone should need it.

(Mike Ruiz/Legendary Productions)

Of course there are plenty of distractions outdoors should you want to keep the party going the next day—centered around the 95-foot pool plucked directly from an Aman Resort. Most of the verdant campus looks out onto the glimmering lake, all landscaped for decadent daytime soirées. Drinks can be served from the pool cabana’s bar, which also comes equipped with a full kitchen and bathroom. Or guests can elevate the rest and recovery to the next level by indulging in the home’s insane Bulgari-inspired spa. The five-diamond wellness oasis boasts its own indoor pool, as well as a Himalayan salt room, sauna, and steam room.

If action is more your bag, Casa Maranello also entertains with its own basketball court that doubles for pickleball. There’s even a putting green and its own private soccer field. Because what would a $55-million Ferrari-dedicated mansion be without its own pitch? One amusing detail reported is that Casa Maranello was not merely paid for via cash or loan, but was partly swapped for a nearby $26 million 18,000-square-foot mansion. Like trading baseball cards, but for the G800 crowd.

We Test-Drove Bentley’s New Continental GT Convertible From Miami To The Florida Keys https://www.maxim.com/rides/test-drive-piloting-a-2025-bentley-continental-gt-convertible-from-miami-to-the-florida-keys/ Thu, 29 May 2025 09:00:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=260488

When word reached us of the imminent opening of Kindler—a wood-fired, farm-to-table restaurant destined to become Islamorada’s premier dining destination—the occasion demanded nothing less than arrival in superlative style. What followed was an unforgettable journey through the Florida Keys, from Miami’s glittering skyline to Islamorada’s Caribbean-like charms, all behind the wheel of the fire-breathing but extremely well-bred 2025 Bentley Continental GT Speed Convertible—courtesy of Miami’s blue-chip Braman Automotive, the largest and most prestigious Bentley dealership in the USA.

Courtesy Bentley Motors

Kindler, located at Three Waters Resort & Marina, an upscale, impeccably-designed Tribute Portfolio property which opened its doors late last year, lagged a bit behind the debut of the resort itself but was well worth the wait. It’s literally bringing the heat, and a new level of culinary excellence, to the land where the “seafood special” reigns supreme. Hightailing it down there in the beautiful new Bentley was just icing on the cake.

Courtesy Braman Automotive

Miami is known for its impressive array of supercars and ultra-luxe rides, and most of them come from Braman Automotive, which caters to celebrities of all stripes as well as the well-heeled and enthusiasts of beautiful automotive art. Although it showcases several of the best luxury brands, Bentley is one of its top marques, embodying as it does the perfect blend of pedigree, design and driving thrills.

Courtesy Bentley Motors

“Bentley is all about craftsmanship, performance, and timeless design—values we take seriously at Braman,” Alex Shack, Braman Automotive Partner & Chief Operations Officer, tells us. “Being recognized as the largest Bentley dealer in the country reflects the trust our clients place in us and our team’s passion for these incredible cars. And the 2025 Bentley GT Convertible exemplifies what makes Bentley special—powerful, refined, and built for those who appreciate the very best.”

Courtesy Braman Automotive

With over 20 strategically-positioned locations in the area and annual sales exceeding 40,000 vehicles, Braman “has established itself as more than a dealership—it’s a gateway to the world’s most coveted automobiles,” the company notes. As Miami’s exclusive authorized dealer for many elite marques including Bentley, it’s the ultimate sign of success when a client receives the keys to a new six-figure tribute to automotive excellence.

Courtesy Bentley Motors

We arrived at Braman’s Biscayne Boulevard headquarters to be met by the breathtaking new 2025 Bentley Continental GT Convertible. With a starting price of $332,000 and all the presence of an incomparably-crafted bespoke British supercar, it represents the latest chapter in a story (the Continental GT) that began transforming the luxury automotive landscape in 2003. Just ask Christophe Georges, Bentley’s dashing French-born Board Member for Sales and Marketing, who’s been with the company for 27 years.

Courtesy Bentley Motors

“The original Continental GT was a landmark that redefined our brand—and the segment,” Georges notes. “Now, 22 years later, the essence remains unchanged: a grand tourer with supercar performance, timeless design, all-wheel drive confidence, and a uniquely Bentley blend of innovation and craftsmanship.” When in South Florida, the convertible version makes for an even more compelling ride. No more so than when speeding down to the Keys.

The most striking evolution of the GTC for 2025 lies in the redesigned front grill and headlight clusters. Gone are the iconic quad-circle headlights, replaced by sophisticated new assemblies with a hand-cut crystal effect, featuring linear LED elements that create a distinctive “eyebrow” extending beyond the oval lenses. While this departure from tradition may spark debate among purists, the result undeniably captures attention without resorting to ostentation.

Courtesy Bentley Motors

The rear of the roadster receives equal attention, with horizontally-elongated teardrop taillights also showcasing a more pronounced crystal-cut aesthetic. Bentley’s designers have masterfully modernized the lighting while preserving the Continental GT’s essential, one-of-a-kind character. During our journey, the Bentley commanded admiration without shouting for attention—the mark of true luxury.

Courtesy Three Waters Resort & Marina

Our destination as noted was was Three Waters Resort & Marina, which debuted in October 2024 as Islamorada’s first branded high-end luxury resort, also home to a historic tiki bar. It’s many attractions include an adult-centric, resort-within-a-resort named The Cove, picture-perfect pools, wellness programming, private seaplane and sport-fishing charters and a number of culinary destinations, with the newly-opened Kindler now reigning supreme and attracting gourmet enthusiasts from as far away as South Beach.

Courtesy Bentley Motors

Departing the urban intensity of Miami at the wheel the Continental GTC Speed, we embraced the never-gets-old allure of US Highway 1—the legendary Overseas Highway that transforms a simple drive into an automotive pilgrimage. With the top down and the Atlantic breeze carrying sprays of salt and a hint of the pleasures to come, the Bentley’s twin-turbocharged, ultra-performance hybrid V8 engine delivered effortless acceleration as we swept past Biscayne Bay’s azure expanse toward the promise of open water, endless sky, and adventure ahead.

Courtesy Bentley Motors

The GTC Speed’s true magic revealed itself as we crossed onto the Keys, where the highway becomes one of the most scenic drives anywhere in the world. Here, the Continental GT Speed’s sophisticated all-wheel-drive system and adaptive suspension proved their worth, maintaining serene composure as we navigated the gentle curves that connect key to key across deep blue waters. And of course we had plenty of power on tap thanks to the Speed edition’s  0-60 mph acceleration in 3.2 seconds and top speed of 177 mph, thanks to its 760 horses.

Rob O’Neal/Florida Keys News Bureau

As the famous Seven Mile Bridge unfolded before us like the road to paradise, the Bentley’s whisper-quiet, leather-filled cabin allowed us to savor the symphony of wind and wave while the speedometer climbed with barely perceptible effort. Every mile deepened the anticipation of what lay ahead, but the journey itself was as much an essential part of the experience that we didn’t want it to end.

Arriving in Islamorada and checking into Three Waters Resort & Marina, we parked for the night and prepared for an evening at Kindler. “Our team extensively researched what culinary offerings were missing in the destination and crafted the menu and experience at Kindler to meet the desires of both locals and the elevated guests of Three Waters Resort,” explains Vanessa Calto, Three Waters Resort & Marina’s Director of Food & Beverage.

Courtesy Three Waters Resort & Marina

Kindler’s centerpiece is an impressive open hearth that dominates the dining room, “where live-fire cooking transforms locally sourced ingredients into Coastal New American masterpieces,” the property declares. The restaurant still embraces the Keys’ fishing culture by encouraging guests to bring their prized catches, which Kindler’s culinary masters will expertly prepare, yet there’s much more on offer here.

Courtesy Three Waters Resort & Marina

The extensive menu is designed to showcase the “kitchen’s mastery over flame and flavor.” The Wood-Grilled Seafood Tower is nothing less than a symphony of grilled and dressed oysters, whole shrimp, octopus in caper butter, and herb-grilled lobster. Other signature initial offerings include Coal Roasted Oysters and Furikake Monkey Bread, while some of the standout entrées are Grouper a la Plancha with chimichurri and Piri Piri Chicken with charred knob onions.

Courtesy Three Waters Resort & Marina

Courtesy Chef de Cuisine Benjamin Loftus, the ultimate expression of Kindler’s fire-focused philosophy is the Bonfire for Two experience, where diners choose between Dry-Aged Fish Three Ways or a Dry-Aged Cowboy Ribeye accompanied by “buried” potatoes and various chef’s selections. Even the obligatory Key Lime Pie gets an upgrade here—reimagined as a bar featuring graham cracker crust and amarena cherry compote.

Courtesy Bentley Motors

As we discovered during our journey, the marriage of Bentley’s refined power and Kindler’s elemental cooking philosophy creates an experience that embodies the very essence of that often-abused term, “luxury lifestyle.” The Continental GT’s beautifully-appointed cabin and effortless performance provided the perfect prelude to Kindler’s bold, off-the-beaten-path flavors and gorgeous presentation.

Courtesy Bentley Motors

The combination of automotive excellence and culinary mastery represents more than mere indulgence—it’s a celebration of craftsmanship, whether applied to hand-built British engineering or tradition-based-yet-innovative American cuisine. In an age of increasing homogenization, the likes of Bentley and Kindler offer authenticity, character, and the kind of indelible experiences that justify the means to enjoy them to the fullest.

Courtesy Bentley Motors

The Florida Keys have long beckoned to those seeking escape from convention. Now, with Kindler’s arrival and the evolution of the Continental GTC available at Braman Automotive, there’s a way to experience both in the pinnacle of comfort, style and truly great taste.

This Key Largo Resort Is A Luxe Getaway That Celebrates Ernest Hemingway https://www.maxim.com/travel/this-key-largo-resort-is-a-luxe-getaway-that-celebrates-ernest-hemingway/ Mon, 07 Apr 2025 10:04:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=254571
Courtesy Bungalows Key Largo

In a region dominated by family-oriented resorts and cookie-cutter marinas, Bungalows Key Largo takes luxury hospitality to a whole new level. Established a few years ago along an unspoiled stretch of Florida coastline, the adults-only enclave represents both “an evolution of Key Largo’s hospitality landscape and a thoughtful homage” to iconic hotels that have defined luxury across generations.

Courtesy Bungalows Key Largo

Owner Jerry Johnson brings a curator’s sensibility to this 12-acre waterfront haven. As the former owner of the much-admired Cheeca Lodge & Spa in Islamorada, Johnson’s concept of hospitality centers on a deep appreciation for how architectural elements and design choices create a lasting connection for guests. Bungalows Key Largo reflects Johnson’s lifetime experience of properties that have defined luxury hospitality—from the storied bungalows of the Beverly Hills Hotel to the sun-drenched retreats along Mexico’s coastline and Italy’s Amalfi cliffs.

Courtesy Bungalows Key Largo

This is no mere pastiche of other properties however. While influences from these iconic destinations inform the overall aesthetic, the resulting creation has its own unique identity. Each bungalow exists as a self-contained hideaway, designed to maximize privacy while offering either a waterfront or garden setting. Johnson’s meticulous planting of hundreds of towering palm trees creates natural allées leading from private bungalows to restaurants and recreation areas, a “subtle invitation to move between solitude and social engagement.”

Courtesy Bungalows Key Largo

The world-class landscape design transforms what could have been merely manicured grounds into an immersive botanical experience, like taking a trip to the Caribbean. Indigenous flora aligned with carefully selected tropical specimens creates jungle-like oases that shift subtly as guests move about the property. This “living tapestry” not only attracts native birds but serves as a set of visual barriers that enhance the sense of seclusion.

Courtesy Bungalows Key Largo

Johnson’s obvious reverence for Ernest Hemingway—that most iconic of Key West denizens—appears throughout the property, without descending into thematic gimmickry. Nowhere is this more evident than in the Hemingway Bar, for which Johnson commissioned artisans to meticulously reproduce the Art Deco tiles from the author’s storied Key West residence. Rather than creating a museum-like reproduction, however, the space captures something more ephemeral: the atmosphere of daiquiri-fueled creative vitality that surrounded the author during his best years.

Courtesy Bungalows Key Largo

Black and white photographs adorning the walls show Hemingway in iconic moments—wrestling massive marlins from tropical waters or raising a celebratory glass after a successful safari in Africa. You can almost feel Papa’s presence, as if he had just stepped away to telephone his editor or perhaps an ex-wife or two. And the cocktails are good enough to inspire a novel of your own.

Courtesy Bungalows Key Largo

Adjacent to this literary watering hole is Bogie & Bacall’s, a restaurant that draws inspiration from multiple chapters of Hemingway’s life. Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall starred in the classic 1944 film adaption of his novel To Have and Have Not—hence the name—which was originally set in Key West. The restaurant’s design vocabulary incorporates elements from all of Hemingway’s beloved locations, creating a space that feels neither like a stage set nor a conventional dining room.

Courtesy Bungalows Key Largo

Beyond the considerable atmospheric charm, what elevates Bogie & Bacall’s is its exacting approach to using fresh, local produce, meat and seafood to enhance the usual culinary offerings in the Keys. The menu strikes a delicate balance—honoring local maritime traditions while incorporating techniques and presentations that reflect the refinement found at the famous resorts around the world that Bungalows pays homage to.

Courtesy Bungalows Key Largo

The usual “catch of the day” is transformed here through precise technique, whether as crudo dressed with citrus harvested from the property’s own trees, or in more complex dishes that demonstrate respect for the integrity of ingredients. Steaks are grilled to perfection, and the wine program similarly defies local convention, offering “thoughtfully curated selections that prioritize character over familiar labels.”

Courtesy Bungalows Key Largo

It might surprise you to learn that this is an all-inclusive resort; but it’s not like any other you might have come across. Rather it’s designed to “eliminate the transactional elements that can fragment the guest experience,” replacing them with a seamless flow between accommodations, dining venues, and recreational offerings. In addition to dining, guests can engage with activities ranging from water sports to mixology classes without “administrative interruptions.”

Courtesy Bungalows Key Largo

Despite its relatively recent emergence, Bungalows Key Largo has already developed a devoted following. The property’s intentionally over-generous use of space—it accommodates fewer guests than many neighboring resorts despite its expansive footprint—creates an atmosphere of exclusivity that “derives not from overt opulence but from thoughtful restraint”. But playful touches like it’s signature tiki bar boats abound.

Courtesy Bungalows Key Largo

As word inevitably spreads about this hidden escape, the challenge for the property will be to retain the essential character of the resort. Johnson and his team realize this and have been gradually enhancing its offerings without compromising the qualities that distinguish Bungalows Key Largo from its neighbors, and the overall Keys ethos of somewhat transient tourism.

Courtesy Bungalows Key Largo

For guests tired of impersonal resorts and trendy boutique hotels that look identical from Miami to Montauk, Bungalows Key Largo delivers something more worthy: an invitation to the very best of the Keys, plus clever nods to other iconic destinations, with food worth remembering, spaces designed for the ultimate in privacy and comfort, and an atmosphere that invites you to slow down and actually enjoy your vacation and feel worlds away, though you’re only an hour from Miami.

This New Luxury Suite Lets You Experience The Best of Key West https://www.maxim.com/travel/this-gorgeous-new-luxury-suite-lets-you-experience-the-very-best-of-key-west/ Mon, 24 Mar 2025 10:19:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=254333

The Southernmost Point of the contiguous United States, Key West is easily one of the country’s most exotic of tropical escape hatches. Travel the bridge-bedecked 110 miles from Miami along the Overseas Highway, Route U.S. 1, and at its end is Zero Duval Street, the address of the easy-breezy Ocean Key Resort & Spa. If Key West is on your bucket list—and it should be—this is ground zero for having a signature laidback experience and a sense of place that mirrors all that the island is known for.

Courtesy Ocean Key Resort & Spa

Decadent splendor, the breathtaking balconies of the 100 rooms and suites look out upon the surrounding waters, the bustling party-hearty scene of Duval Street, as well as Sunset Pier, with its colorful characters gathering for the nightly ritual of watching the tangerine orb slide into the sea. Entering the airy lobby, laced with vines and its hallway ceilings adorned with wire birdcages, visitors feel the island-like atmosphere. And now guests can indulge in an uber-panoramic view of it all in the resort’s colorful and expansive new suite, the Flamingo Royale, which is gift-wrapped with a spacious balcony.

Courtesy Ocean Key Resort & Spa

Favorite sons Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams, Jimmy Buffett and Harry S. Truman would give it their seals of approval, kicking back within its vaulted ceilings, teak and tiled floors, full dining room, and two airy bedrooms both with en-suite marble baths. While the natural lighting is all, the teal walls, local artwork, and bespoke wall coverings, mixing it up with one-of-kind furnishings, will put a Cheshire Cat-like smile on guests’ faces.

Courtesy Ocean Key Resort & Spa

Measuring an impressive 1,200 square feet, this suite is worthy of a Pulitzer prizewinner or swashbuckling superyacht captain. The designers call the whimsical décor “Tropical Camp,” but it stops just short of kitsch, staying on the tasteful side of the equation. The hues mirror Key West’s surroundings: pinks, turquoises, limes, golds, and pops of accent pillows. Of course, there is a sizable built-in bar too. Salty dog, anyone?

Courtesy Ocean Key Resort & Spa

Laureled with Travel + Leisure World’s Best Award-winning resorts honors, Ocean Key features a Gulf-facing expansive pool (and tiki bar cantina Liquid), and a AAA Four-Diamond Award rooftop restaurant named Hot Tin Roof (after the Tennessee Williams play). Walk out its doors, and guests can take in the Hemingway House and Museum, the Key West Aquarium, Mallory Square, Truman’s Little White House, Old Town, and all those restaurants and watering holes that “Papa” and Jimmy Buffett whiled away the hours in. Hydrate and detox in the SpaTerre, which features Balinese spa treatments and Thai body rituals, as well as facials and body scrubs.

Courtesy Ocean Key Resort & Spa

The resort is well known for Hot Tin Roof, one of Key West’s top-rated restaurants, where executive chef Scott Maurer calls his locally motivated cuisine “conch-fusion,” a nod to Key West’s love of conch fritters and chowder and its blend of Florida and Caribbean fare. Fish comes from the Gulf waters, and includes sumptuous shellfish specialties such as a warm-water lobster cocktail with avocado in a cilantro dipping sauce. Top of the list is the seared black grouper swimming in a chorizo-coconut curry.

Courtesy Ocean Key Resort & Spa

Split two entrees and go surf-and-turf, as one of the tastiest preparations is a spice-rubbed bone-in New York strip steak with potato gratin, and cabernet butter. The restaurant’s Key lime pie rivals many seasoned outposts and is a sure contender for best in town. Dining is either indoors or out as you prefer. And the cozy, colonial-inspired bar is often the setting for unforgettable nights.

Courtesy Ocean Key Resort & Spa

The resort’s iconic Sunset Pier bar hangs over the waters. Live bands play at night, where visitors can dance and enjoy a light-fare seafood-dominant menu. The bar is epic and justly famous for meticulously made drinks. It’s the ultimate spot to watch the sunset, gaze at yachts cruising by, and dream of making the 90-mile run to Cuba—after a couple more cocktails, of course.

Courtesy Ocean Key Resort & Spa

The pool, which features a sizable hot tub, may just be the most privileged perch in Key West. And there is no shortage of things to do surrounding the hotel on this intimate 4-mile island, from the saucy annual Fantasy Fest to the Ernest Hemingway look-alike contest. Water sports abound, including parasailing and jet skiing, as well as snorkeling and simply beach combing. Do what the local “conchs” do, and get yourself a bicycle. Or rent a pedi-cab and let someone else do the work.

Courtesy Ocean Key Resort & Spa

Next to the lobby bar where rum drinks are proffered upon arrival, the hotel boutique Madda Fella showcases local artisan readymades and paintings, as well as necessary sundries and some of the suites’ little touches. A Noble House Resorts property, when the luxury hospitality group acquired Ocean Key in 1998, the hoteliers said they made a “commitment to transform it into Key West’s top destination… assuring that it would “constantly evolve as the island’s top luxury resort, while maintaining a careful nod to all that makes Key West unique.” Mission accomplished.

Courtesy Ocean Key Resort & Spa

“It’s the best place I’ve been anytime, anywhere,” said Hemingway of Key West. Ocean Key aspires to that standard. Before leaving, however, make sure you take a photo by the legendary mile marker—and stop by the Green Parrot, which Papa did rather often, for a drink en route.

Take A Culinary Journey From Peru To Polynesia At This Hotel Eatery In Miami’s Art-Fueled Wynwood https://www.maxim.com/food-drink/take-a-culinary-journey-from-peru-to-polynesia-at-this-hotel-eatery-in-miamis-art-fueled-wynwood/ Wed, 19 Mar 2025 08:55:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=251959

While Miami’s white-hot Wynwood neighborhood has so far been laser-focused on trendy dining establishments, the scene has now matured to the point where its ready for something a bit more organic. Enter the new Wyn Wyn at the Arlo Wynwood, the first hotel in the neighborhood that’s home to the world’s largest concentration of street art, which has become a mecca for great food, fun drinks and cool design.

The new restaurant, which opened last month, is devoted to fresh, sustainable fare and a “diverse fusion of global tastes, offering a casual yet compelling culinary journey across continents from Peru to Polynesia”—but using local Florida components almost exclusively. With offerings that “showcase regionally-procured ingredients and nutrient-dense superfoods,” the vibrant setting doesn’t take itself too seriously but provides plenty of Instagrammable moments.

Courtesy Arlo Wynwood

Situated on the light-filled ground floor of the art-infused hotel, Wyn Wyn is designed to deliver a “gastronomic experience that ideally aligns with Wynwood’s creative and cultural landscape,” as it evolves and more people move in. Wyn Wyn celebrates the local “cultural ecology” and is dedicated to collaborating with regional farmers, fully utilizing Florida’s bountiful indigenous produce.

Courtesy Arlo Wynwood

The eatery presents a unique selection of international dishes with playful references to Peruvian, Western European, Southeast Asian, and Polynesian cuisine, with a few flourishes on classic American style. The menu expresses Wyn Wyn’s “commitment to transforming premier local, market-sourced ingredients into memorable creations” with a cool bar scene to match.

Courtesy Arlo Wynwood

Designed by Humberto De Andrade, Wyn Wyn welcomes diners into a “lively, immersive environment where natural elements meet contemporary refinement.” Organic textures including reclaimed wood, hand-selected stone, and verdant foliage create an atmosphere of comfort and warmth, along with vivid colors, playful patterns, dynamic overhead lighting, and oversized art installations.

Courtesy Arlo Wynwood

The heart of the venue is an open kitchen, with a six-person Chef’s Counter allowing diners to interact with the chefs rather than just remotely enjoying the fruits of their labor. The 2,750-sq.-ft. space comfortably seats 85 in a mix of tables and upholstered banquettes, extending seamlessly to the outdoor terrace for al fresco dining day or night.

Courtesy Arlo Wynwood

Every component of the restaurant “reinforces Wyn Wyn’s emphasis on sustainability,” the property promises, most emphatically the herb garden at the hotel’s third-floor, indoor-outdoor retreat Higher Ground, where the kitchen team will cultivate and harvest its own ingredients. “We aim to introduce a novel perspective to Wynwood, where thinking globally while acting locally forms the foundation of our philosophy.”

Courtesy Arlo Wynwood

Wyn Wyn’s menu takes you on journey of taste to Peru, Southeast Asia, Western Europe, and Polynesia, all supported by regional Florida suppliers like Paradise Farms and Counter Culture Kombucha. The menu is organized into “Bites,” “Salads,” “Something more,” and “Sweets,” with dinner selections emphasizing wholesome eating with a consistent theme of incorporating superfoods and other beneficial elements.

Courtesy Arlo Wynwood

The “Bites” category presents shareable appetizers such as Beet Tartare with Mango “Yolk,” an inventive spin on the traditional preparation accompanied by ancient-grain crostinis; Steam Buns filled with ginger-soy short rib, yuzu pickled cucumbers, gochujang aioli, and crisp radish; and Lobster Causa served with chilled yellow potato, aji amarillo crema, smoked salmon roe, and rice crisps. Patrons can also savor fresh salads, from the Superfood Tabbouleh to reimagined classics like the Wyn Wyn Caesar with green goddess dressing.

Courtesy Arlo Wynwood

Main courses in the “Something More” section include spectacular dishes like Banana Leaf Wrapped Local Snapper with superfood-enhanced purple sticky rice, house-prepared kimchi, and tableside-poured warm coconut milk; Korean Fried Chicken marinated in gochujang chili paste with a sauce made from fermented garlic honey; and Hibachi Grilled Grass-Fed Prime Beef, which guests get to grill tableside, accompanied by bok choy, Okinawa purple yams, gochujang aioli, ginger tamari, and yuzu-pickled cucumbers.

Courtesy Arlo Wynwood

Complementing the fresh, wholesome approach of the menu, Wyn Wyn’s cocktail program offers playful, delicious beverages featuring superfood ingredients. Standouts include the Green Goodness, a gin-based cocktail packed with electrolytes from house-made wheatgrass, cucumber, and melon juice; the Pisco Morada, a house-made chicha morada enhanced by antioxidant-rich purple corn, pineapple, lime, and various spices; and interpretations of classic cocktails like the Old-Fashioned-inspired Personal Vice with pecan-infused bourbon and cacao bitters.

Courtesy Arlo Wynwood

Designed by Meyer Davis, an award winning, globally recognized New York City–based design firm with major hospitality industry cred, the Arlo Wynwood “draws on the neighborhood’s bold and curated artistic nature while embracing an eclectic industrial aesthetic where organic meets modern.” It’s known for its many art installations as well as a South Beach-worthy rooftop pool that is a work of art in itself.

Check Into A Historic Miami Beach Hotel Favored By Frank Sinatra https://www.maxim.com/travel/this-historic-miami-beach-hotel-favored-by-frank-sinatra-just-got-a-47-million-makeover/ Thu, 02 Jan 2025 11:38:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=248338
Courtesy Cadillac Hotel & Beach Club

When the chic Cadillac Hotel & Beach Club was originally built in 1940 it was the largest and most luxurious hotel in Miami Beach. Named in honor of the most elegant car on the market at the time, the hit flick Pal Joey was filmed there in 1957, featuring a swinging Frank Sinatra and two of the most beautiful stars in Hollywood at the time, Rita Hayworth and Kim Novak. Fast forward 60 years and, after a $47 million renovation in late 2018, the hotel was restored to its former glory and meticulously updated to become part of the estimable Autograph Collection.

And now it is unveiling the next phase of its evolution with a new look and feel for Donna Mare, its hip, upscale Italian restaurant, now rebranded as Donna Mare Italian Chophouse, where Sinatra would surely have felt right at home. Beach chic is still the order of the day, but everything has been carefully and stylishly upgraded, landing the eatery squarely in the center of South Beach’s sinful dining scene.

Courtesy The Cadillac Hotel & Beach Club

It’s a return to the era when the most glamorous stars in music and film, including Nat King Cole, Jackie Gleason, and Ann-Margret, stayed at the Cadillac when they came to town. One of the Art-Deco-meets-Streamline-Moderne architectural marvels lining Collins Avenue’s historic district, by the Sinatra era it was well established as fantasist port of call for those seeking tropical-chic accommodations, the finest food and drink, concierge amenities non pareil, and health-and-fitness pampering.

All centered, of course, on the gorgeous, palm-tree-lined pool and beach setup, among the most photographed in all of Miami to this day. Sun, sand, and dare we say sex (at least when Ol’ Blue Eyes and his Rat Pack pals were in town) were the order of the day, every whim extravagantly catered to, from sunrise to well past sunset. The soundtrack? Pal Joey‘s chart-topping hit song, The Lady is a Tramp, which went on to become one of Sinatra’s most famous tracks of all time.

The airy and elegant 357-key property encompasses an entire block; the configuration of the hotel, which last year snagged a top Reader’s Choice Award by Condé Nast Traveler—pairs its original 14-story tower with an eight-story addition built in 1956. Prominent Miami Beach architect Roy France was the man behind the aesthetic, taking notes from the aeronautical designs of the era and those tail-finned Caddies that lent their name–with nods to what would become known as Nautical Deco.

The most recent interior redesign, overseen by esteemed Bill Rooney Studio, provided a dose of European Riviera that blends the modern with the traditional. Evoking a more glamorous era, the hotel is bedecked in smoky-blue hues clusters of chandeliers. Head to your suite, of course Art Deco-inspired but warmly ambient, with marble floors punctuated by exposed beams and wooden fixtures. The color motif is gold and grays and nostalgic 1940s beach scenes adorn the walls.

There are now two pools to match the two towers, and of course plenty of cabanas, while a raised platform of wooden decking and canvas umbrellas houses Bungalow Beach Bar & Grill, a casual beachside restaurant and bar that has its toes in the sand. Favorite dishes include tuna poke nachos ladled with crispy shrimp chips; Maine lobster roll snacks with shoestring fries; wild cured salmon; and a wagyu beef cheeseburger that Jimmy Buffett would have had as a last meal. It stands out among the cheeseburgers in paradise of Florida, with garnishes of heirloom tomatoes, white cheddar, and red onion jam.

Courtesy The Cadillac Hotel & Beach Club

Then there’s Donna Mare, which was widely heralded by national and local publications even before the new redesign was unveiled. The trendsetting trattoria, located off the hotel’s lobby, is focused on southern Italian dishes including Neapolitan pizza, homemade pasta, grilled wild-caught fish and grassfed meats in an intimate setting evoking the old-world atmosphere of coastal Italy remixed with modern Miami style. The quality of the fare alone has seen it bestowed with one of Departures magazine’s “favorite Miami hotels” honors.

Though it’s hard to leave what the New York Post called one of the most “draw-dropping” pools in South Beach, it’s well worth a visit to the hotel’s K’Alma Spa, where treatments are infused with a European flair, particularly the South of France, and “highlighting the hotel’s affinity for all things rose”—and rosé. Treatments, including full-body massages, can also be provided from international health experts at the poolside spa cabanas or within a guest’s own suite—the top drawer Cadillac Suite if you really know what you’re doing.

“We took a lot of effort to preserve the beauty of this place,” Neil Shah, CEO of the hotel’s operator, Hersha, told the Miami Herald in the wake of its $47 million revamp. “We’re going for European sensibility in style, design and service.” Designer Bill Rooney added, “The Cadillac Hotel & Beach Club has been designed to facilitate luxurious lounging of an era gone with an international flare, all inspired by the past glory of the hotel and Miami Beach. A balance of catered service that helps you let down your hair after a long day in the spotlight. From the poolside cabanas to the bar in the lobby, the hotel welcomes you into the smoothest scene in Miami with open arms and a drink on hand.”

Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna Is Maxim’s November/December Cover Star https://www.maxim.com/news/congresswoman-anna-paulina-luna-is-maxims-november-december-cover-star/ Fri, 01 Nov 2024 16:00:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=244416
(Photography: Gilles Bensimon, Styling: Karin Agstam, Hair: Marcelino, Makeup: Natasha Smee, Photo Assistant: Sam Evans Butler, Assistant Stylist: Mookie Sauers, Digital Technician: Clint Hild)

Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna has blazed an unlikely trail to Capitol Hill. A decade ago, she appeared as a Maxim model driving a cherry-red Chevy Nova SS. Now, at 35, she’s not only the youngest Republican in the House and the first Mexican-American representative from Florida, but she’s back in Maxim, proving that power and glamour are not mutually exclusive.

(Gilles Bensimon)

In our interview, Luna, who represents Florida’s 13th congressional district, opens up about her path from a challenging childhood to the corridors of government. She also reveals, for the first time, details about her difficult upbringing. The Congresswoman talks candidly about her military service and her unexpected foray into politics.

How would you describe your childhood?

I didn’t come from a political pedigree, money or attend an Ivy League college. My father struggled with substance abuse. He was in and out of jail until later in my teens and, at one point, became homeless. He got clean when I was a young adult, and we were able to catch up on all the time we missed. Sadly, he passed away before he could see me become a member of Congress.

My mom had me at 20. Her family had also been heavily impacted by drugs. She eventually ended up getting married, but it was an extremely abusive relationship. At one point, we tried to go to a women’s shelter with my little sister and brother, but the conditions were so unsafe that she had to bring us back home.

(Gilles Bensimon)

This is the first time I’ve ever publicly spoken about this. Seeing what my family went through, particularly my mom, instilled a deep desire to stand up for those being hurt and to do the right thing. My parents may not have been perfect, but I did learn from their strengths and mistakes, and I’m extremely proud of them both.

The American dream is alive and well, and I’m living proof. I tell people that you may not be able to control the circumstances in which you are born, but you can control the outcome. I had to grow up fast, but I never stopped fighting. Because of hard work and perseverance, I’m now a member of Congress.

At what point did you decide you wanted to join the military?

I went to several high schools, including one where a gang shooting occurred. I always wanted to go to college but had no idea how I was going to pay for it. One night, I went out with some friends and overheard a few guys talking about how the Marines were paying for their education. I ended up jumping into the conversation and enlisting in the Air Force. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

(Anna Paulina Luna)

What were some of the lessons you took from the military?

First, the concept of “total and complete ownership.” The mission always comes first, and the commanding officer is entirely responsible for the mission’s success and failure. I also learned direct communication and delegation of authority. I run my office very similarly to how a base is run—top-down delegation of authority. However, I would never ask my staff or “troops” to do something I wouldn’t do alongside them. We’re a team, and there must be team cohesion to have a successful unit and, in my case, a congressional office. Lastly, I learned to never quit. I wasn’t successful during my first campaign; however, I didn’t give up. When I was elected this cycle and flipped a seat, it was all because I never quit. Failure is never an option.

What led you to become a Maxim model?

At the time, there was this idea that women in the military couldn’t be feminine. I wanted to help shatter the narrative and decided to join the Maxim model competition [in 2014]. I had also received permission to do it from the public affairs office at the Pentagon, so it seemed like the military also wanted help breaking the stereotype. I ended up getting into the magazine and still have that issue to this day!

Luna with son Henry in her Washington, D.C. office, 2023 (Anna Paulina Luna)

What ultimately drove you to politics and public service?

In 2018, I got out of the military. I was on track to go to medical school, and during my gap year, I started volunteering for an organization that counters child sex trafficking. I quickly realized that there was a direct correlation between an open Southern border and increased cases of child trafficking. At that point, I became politically active as I realized that many people were uninformed about what was happening. I realized that to change the national narrative and to try to solve the issue, I would have to run for office. There’s not exactly a manual on how to do that, but I figured it out. This job is not easy, but it’s extremely rewarding. I know that I’m already having an impact on foreign policy and our military and raising awareness to stop crimes against children.

Most people play it safe, but you’re not afraid to tread where others fear. Why do you think there are so few politicians like you?

On both sides, there are politicians who are content with being elected and not making waves because they want to maintain their position in office and make reelection easier. Those people are why we’re currently facing some of the problems we have, whether it’s regarding foreign policy, the national debt or a decline in military recruitment.

(Gilles Bensimon)

I knocked on 50,000 doors and made more than 90,000 phone calls during my first election. Almost everyone I spoke to had lost faith in politicians, and I kept hearing: “Please don’t become a part of the problem,” or “I trust you to do the right thing.” So I promised myself and my constituents when I got elected that I would represent them and fulfill my campaign promises.

I realize that it comes with a price, though. When I first got elected, there was a well-known left-leaning outlet that tried to smear me. They even went so far as printing lies that they later had to retract. However, the silver lining in all of it was that after this political hit piece, Time magazine did a deep dive into my bio and found out I was telling the truth. They then named me to the TIME100 “Next” list as one of the most influential leaders in the world.

What has surprised you most about the world of politics?

How quickly things leak to the press! I remember when I first got elected, we were in a closed-door session to talk about the election of the next Speaker of the House, and no press was allowed. After the meeting, I headed back to my office, and before I could even let my chief of staff know what had happened, he asked me about a conversation in the meeting. I later found out that someone was leaking information to the press. News travels at lightning speed in Washington, and the press is everywhere.

Luna on the job during a House Oversight Committee hearing earlier this year (Anna Paulina Luna)

There’s so much bias and propaganda masquerading as news. What do you think has led us to this?

It seemed like during the Obama years, the media began to be openly involved in propaganda. This largely increased when Donald Trump decided to run for president in 2015. The mask of the legacy media was removed and exposed for what it really was. Then, social media started to push out legacy media. With censorship isolating viewpoints and preventing dialogue, I believe this led to polarization. I know certain platforms were censoring because I investigated them and saw clear evidence as a congressional investigator on House Oversight. However, being a public figure and elected official makes it hard to combat slander and defamation as we don’t have the same protections as a private citizen would.

Donald Trump is the most successful political entrepreneur of our generation. What are some things you’ve learned from him?

I’ve known President Trump for four years. There are four things I’ve learned from him: First, always do what you think is right for the people you serve, even if it means going against the grain and sometimes your own party. The Washington, D.C. elite is real, and when it comes to fixing a broken system, being an outsider is not a bad thing.

Second, the best deal comes at the eleventh hour. I’ve learned a lot from listening to him talk about interactions with foreign leaders and dealing with brokering trade deals. Honestly, he’s made me a better negotiator.

Next, stay focused. Don’t drink. Don’t smoke. Have a clear head.

Finally, don’t forget the personal touch. Behind closed doors, he’s the most hospitable and caring person I’ve ever met. His family adores him, and so does his staff. He has personal friendships with many members of Congress and the Senate and does little things to stay in touch, such as writing letters and making calls.

Luna with President Donald Trump at a rally in Florida, 2022 (Anna Paulina Luna)

What’s your favorite car and why?

The INEOS Grenadier! I’ve always been into exploring the outdoors and used to own a Jeep. The make of their 4×4 is impressive A majority of the vehicle is analog. It’s like being in a jetliner with the interface.

What’s your favorite firearm?

I currently own and carry a 9mm SIG Sauer P365. Of all the firearms I’ve shot and practiced on, this is the most user-friendly and reliable. I had someone break into my home when I was stationed in Missouri, and it wasn’t until I got my concealed carry permit that I felt safe again. I carry it every day.

Who’s a better shot, you or your husband, Andrew?

I’m actually a pretty good shot, but in all honesty, he’s better. Andrew was a U.S. Air Force combat controller and went to sniper school. Combat controllers are some of the most highly trained military special operators in the Department of Defense, so he has had a bit more range time. [Laughs]

(Gilles Bensimon)

What music do you like to listen to?

I’m a big fan of Led Zeppelin. “When the Levee Breaks” is one of my favorite songs, but my Spotify playlist includes everything from Max Richter to J. Cole to Artemas.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?

The historical archives at the Vatican.

Will you let Maxim be the first to know when you run for president of the United States?

Of course…if I do. But right now, I’m focused on representing the amazing people of Pinellas County and Florida’s 13th congressional district.

Check Into These Stunning Waterfront Resorts In The Florida Keys https://www.maxim.com/travel/check-into-these-stunning-waterfront-resorts-in-the-florida-keys/ Fri, 05 Jul 2024 10:41:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=236398

Two very welcoming luxury resorts in the Florida Keys—one situated off Marathon, the other edging Key West—amongst the area’s newest offerings, are transfusing new blood into that sepia-postcard of a 180-mile-long escape hatch along the Overseas Highway, which rolls over countless bridges from Miami to the Southernmost Point of the United States.

You’ve got the Atlantic on the one side, the Gulf on the other, and you just follow the salt-encrusted mile markers to marina bars, key-lime pie stands, shell shops, literary landmarks, turtle hospitals, and a flotsam of stilt-house, fried-fish-and-margarita joints between. Keep your eyes on the road. It’s one of the world’s most scenic routes, and there’s passing dolphin pods and blurry-eyed snowbirds coming and going. For the epic drive we rented something suitably cool via Turo—more on that below.

Photo: Andy Newman / Florida Keys News Bureau

Eventually you’ll arrive in Key West, an exotic time bubble like New Orleans or Havana, nicknamed the “Conch Republic.” Before unofficial Key West mayor Jimmy Buffett put the rascally port on the map, Hemingway staked claim to its infamy there, along with the six-toed cats housed at his former getaway-turned-museum, one of Key West’s top attractions and conveniently located near the legendary Green Parrot saloon.

Photo: Andy Newman / Florida Keys News Bureau

Any excursion through the Keys is a bucket-list road trip for the snorkeling, azure-tangerine sunsets, food and drink, and casting for all that bonefish, pompano, grouper, cobia, snapper, and tarpon. There are pockets of white sandy beaches à la the Mediterranean on the way. And some damn fine, five-star accommodations in the form of Isla Bella Beach Resort and Ocean’s Edge Resort & Marina.

Courtesy Isla Bella Beach Resort

Follow the winding road off the highway and into Isla Bella (“Beautiful Island”), which opened in mid-2019 bringing a fresh breeze to the Keys, and guests will find a streamlined Gulf-side sanctuary sprawling over 24 acres of tropical gardens, including rare sand dunes, five stunning oceanfront saltwater swimming pools, and a water-sports marina. Besides a pampering spa and full gym, you’ll also find four completely distinct restaurants within, including a cool new sand-in-the-toes sushi cabana that’s one of our area favorites.

Photo: Douglas Friedman / Courtesy Isla Bella Beach Resort

The marina is the launching pad for fishing charters, jet ski tours, and harbor cruises, as well as kayaking, snorkeling, paddle-boarding and scuba-diving. Located in Marathon between Key Largo and Key West, the 199-room resort puts occupants at arm’s distance from party-hearty Duval Street to fully experience the tranquil Keys. The spa is exceptional, and known for its full-body exfoliation and hot stone massage. That one-two punch is called “Margarita on the Rocks.”

Photo: Douglas Friedman / Courtesy Isla Bella Beach Resort

The three-story hotel, following a nautical blue-and-white motif, hits all the mile markers: Airy minimalist suites, killer oceanfront views from all rooms with terrace-to-sand first floor spaces, world-class spa and cuisine, and imaginative activities for everyone. There is a bocce ball court and giant chessboards. Want to run with the dolphins? The hotel provides a guide for jogging the pedestrian-lane Seven Mile Bridge. Guests can even join the staff in cleaning up the ocean’s morning beach debris, or ogle the resident manatee.

Courtesy Isla Bella Beach Resort

The choices for dining are so wide that guests have no reason to leave the property if they prefer. The showcase is Mahina, which features local fare riffing off Hawaiian Regional cuisine. Sushi Cabana is a brand new al fresco restaurant, offering the finest of local seafood, edging the Yellowfin swimming pool. Enjoy a cheeseburger in paradise at the Burger Palace, or some luscious tropical libations at the beachside bar. Mornings are for the Marketplace, a quaint coffee shop with fun sundry accessorizing. No wonder Travel + Leisure recently ranked Isla Bella one of the top resort hotels in all of Florida.

Courtesy Ocean’s Edge Resort & Marina

Heading south, adjacent to Key West on Stock Island, Oceans Edge Resort & Marina is a laidback spread, sprawled across 20 acres and known for its 165-slip marina where sportsmen can dock and bring in their fresh catches to the restaurant, the Yellowfin Bar & Kitchen. The light-filled dining room grills them to their choice. The happy hour, often with live bands, is a local favorite. Catch-of-the-day tacos and poke bowls are their signature dishes. All seafood is sourced from surrounding waters.

Courtesy Ocean’s Edge Resort & Marina

A rarity in any hotel, Oceans Edge’s Stock Market actually sells liquor along with various sundries for hitting the beach or bringing a reminder home. Besides six saltwater swimming pools, the hotel provides glass-bottom boat tours and fishing trips. Or take a kayak into the glades. Crisp local style is how the hotel describes their waterfront rooms and terraces. Like the Isla Bella, the color scheme is simplistic blues and whites, but with a touch more Floridian pop. Think relaxed comfort, furnished balconies and spa-like baths.

Courtesy Ocean’s Edge Resort & Marina

An angler’s paradise, the 175 suite hotel is favored by activity-seeking vacationers and locals who dock their boats there or stop by after fishing to a nibble and a sip, such as blackened shrimp tacos and a Salty Dog. Talk is less about current news events than what’s biting that day. The suites and the bar, in a pleasant way, are a kind of Tommy Bahama-meets-Tommy Hilfiger scheme. Nautical prep.

Courtesy Ocean’s Edge Resort & Marina

If guests want to step out nearby, Yahman’s Authentic Jamaican Jerk Shack is a best bet. The hotel provides free cruiser bicycles, paddle boards, and kayaks to explore the lagoon. Giant tarpon are often seen along the dock, trailing the tosses when fishermen are cleaning their catches. The configuration of the cottage-style hotel spread gives the vibe of a seaside residential enclave. And to that effect, Oceans Edge is actually reached at the end of a small neighborhood lane on Stock Island. Plus the hotel provides a 10-minute shuttle to Key West’s Duval Street on the hour, daily.

For the scenic cruise down from South Beach we eschewed a traditional rental car in favor something with a little more style from Turo. A sort of Airbnb for vehicles, Turo has a massive selection of rides you can book via their website or app, with everything from six-figure supercars to classics and compact convertibles on offer from trusted hosts. Miami is particularly fertile ground for scoring a cool ride on a budget, which is exactly what we did.

Courtesy Maserati

Such an epic stretch of road called for something sporty, so after browsing a bit from the comfort of home—with Turo you never have to deal with those tedious rental car counters—we selected a cherry red Maserati GranTurismo. It wasn’t brand new, but that’s not the point of Turo; the buy-in on this beauty was less than a mid-range Toyota at a traditional car rental spot. As always we read the reviews carefully to make sure we were getting a pristine set of wheels that would provide plenty of joy en route.

Courtesy Maserati

The GranTurismo boasts Pininfarina styling, a Ferrari engine, a heavenly exhaust note and the thrill only an Italian sports car can convey. The Turo rental process was seamless; for a nominal fee the host dropped the car off at our hotel so we were ready to roll down to the Keys bright and early and with minimal inconvenience. Heads turned as we flew down the the legendary Overseas Highway, a massive grin on our face. When planning your next road trip, this is an option you surely must consider; we’re sure glad we did.

Miami Art Deco Hotel Gem Gets Ritzy Revamp https://www.maxim.com/travel/this-art-deco-hotel-gem-in-miami-beach-just-got-a-ritzy-revamp/ Wed, 19 Jun 2024 08:30:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=235463

Following a $4 million renovation in recent years, Miami Beach’s The Balfour Hotel is now even more the serene oasis and hidden gem is has been since 1940. The makeover of this estimable South Beach retreat includes upgrades to the historic Art Deco-style space’s lobby restaurant, public areas, and 82 guest rooms.

The configuration of the landmark boutique refuge, designed by influential, aeronautics-obsessed architect Anton Skislewicz, is a U-shaped open-air courtyard that links its two classic pastel-and-stucco structures, all nestled, steps from the beach, in an affluent southern corridor that borders the high-octane side of Ocean Drive.

Courtesy The Balfour South Beach

The space today is both timeless and modern. “Our impeccably renovated, classic art deco property is ideally situated near South Beach’s world-famous attractions but quietly nestled in the affluent South of Fifth neighborhood, an enclave that offers guests a vibe of relaxation and comfortable luxury,” said former general manager James Moore.

Courtesy The Balfour South Beach

Despite the recent upgrades, the hotel’s original moniker “Lord Balfour” remains illuminated in cerulean lights, highlighting its ties to the past. (What is Miami Beach if not for those noir-evocative vintage neon signs?) The Balfour too is known for its in-room spa treatments, geometrical palm-fronded swimming pool, and world-class restaurant, the latter of which features Floridian Coastal and Latin fare and both classic and tropical libations.

Courtesy The Balfour South Beach

Depart its doors, and hop on a house-provided touring bicycle to bars, boutiques, eats, nightclubs, the nearby art district, and the Atlantic Ocean’s golden sands. The hotel provides complimentary beach umbrellas and chairs for its guests on the famous oceanfront stretch a mere block-and-a-half away, convenient for a day’s lounging in paradise. For guests who want to walk it off, the Balfour features weekly beach walks each Saturday morning.

Courtesy The Balfour South Beach

Guest rooms include 55 standard kings, ten double queens, 16 superior kings, and three suites featuring newly renovated bathrooms and furnishings. The window treatments alone are an Art Deco dream. All the rooms have an old-school glamour, and more so a warmth in tones and character not characteristic of many of the more minimalistic of Art Deco hotels further north in the deejay-rumbling Ocean Drive hub.

Courtesy The Balfour South Beach

It is a transporting place as soon as guests enters the lobby, with its design motifs and art installations nodding to the hotel’s namesake Lord Balfour who died about a decade before the hotel was built. The streamlined modernist design of the hotel is mirrored in bedroom appointments right down to the linens. White with effervescent wall murals that evoke Pop Art.

Courtesy The Balfour South Beach

While there many notable restaurants in the area, the Balfour’s own Dining Room, holds its own and then some. The food and beverage program is helmed by award-winning chefs. Featuring a wraparound terrace—much of it facing the Ocean Drive scene—the open-air dining space serves cuisine from morning breakfast and brunch to lunch and dinner.

Courtesy The Balfour South Beach

The kitchen excels in brunch favorites such as eggs Benedict and steak and eggs, as well as fresh samplers such as avocado toast. Appetizer favorites have included local ceviche and truffle fries. There is no sense in not taking in at dinner the Florida snapper fillet with handmade chimichurri. Not to mention tacos, burgers and more.

Courtesy The Balfour South Beach

The dining room’s centerpiece is the hotel’s original marble fireplace, often pointed out on architectural tours. Floors are the original terrazzo. Besides the dining rooms and lobby, the hotel curates a rotating collection of art, from tropical-inspired to contemporary modern. It is noted for showcasing both established and incoming artists, in a partnership with the renowned Lina Cerrone Gallery. A vibrant-hued exhibit entitled “Polychrome” by artist Nathalie Moulinet is currently on exhibit through August 1.

Courtesy The Balfour South Beach

The swimming pool area is a work of art unto itself. Grab a towel from the room or the front desk. The elevated plunge pool has a nifty detail: an underwater window that provides the “ultimate Instagram shots,” says the property, of swimmers behind the glass wall. Terracotta mosaic tiles, rattan furnishings, and chaise lounges create a timeless aura. The hotel provides rotating seasonal refreshers and homemade fruit smoothies.

Courtesy Issabella’s

A standout dining option in the general vicinity is Issabella’s, a modern Mediterranean restaurant serving handcrafted cocktails and delicious dishes on nearby Lincoln Road. With several tasty options on the menu, including fan favorites Spicy Rigatoni , made with Calabrian chili, cream and parmesan, and Crab Pasta, linguine served with lump crab, cherry tomatoes, olive oil and garlic breadcrumbs, guests can’t go wrong with dinner here.

Courtesy Issabella’s

The dining room has a stylish Mediterranean vibe, while outdoor terrace seating on the pedestrian mall makes for the ideal perch to people-watch. The wine and cocktail list is impeccably curated, and the restaurant is a favorite with those looking to celebrate special occasions or just be transported to Europe for a night. One one recent evening there was a live flamenco performance.

Courtesy The Balfour South Beach

It remains a mystery as to why the Balfour Hotel was originally named after Lord Arthur James Balfour, an early 20th century prime minister, politician, and notable wit of England. There is no mystery however as to why to check out and in to this important oasis of timeless beauty, glamour, and tranquil bliss, or detour to Issabella’s while you enjoy your stay.

This Retro-Cool South Beach Hotel Is A Perfect Pit Stop For The Miami F1 Grand Prix https://www.maxim.com/travel/this-retro-cool-south-beach-hotel-is-a-perfect-pit-stop-for-the-miami-f1-grand-prix/ Tue, 30 Apr 2024 09:50:00 +0000 https://www.maxim.com/?p=232244

A breezy-chic and glamorous retreat of South Beach in all its Art Deco glory and canal-meets-the-Atlantic ocean location, The Gates Hotel South Beach officially opened in 2015. But its history as a inn dates back to 1954 when it was originally opened as Motel Ankara, designed in the futuristic Googie architecture style—the heyday of Miami’s curvilinear, streamlined-chic ethos of the era. That’s just one reason why it’s a perfect pit stop for the upcoming Miami F1 Grand Prix race, along with the SLS Hotel, where Maxim’s Miami Race Weekend party revs up at Hyde Beach on May 3.

Airy, geometric, and boasting one of the coolest lobby-lounges in the city, The Gates is far from the priciest hotel in South Beach, but it is arguably amongst the most retro-stylish.

Courtesy The Gates Hotel South Beach

The structure forms an organic half circle, with rooms and suites designed in an “L” shape, embracing its surroundings. Esteemed architectural design firm Dutch East Design and Focus Lighting collaborated to transform The Gates, while maintaining the structure’s original integrity and Jetsons-esque design elements.

Courtesy The Gates Hotel South Beach

The Ankara’s sprawling pool, with its tiki-meets-surf style references, was a thing of wonder, designed by architect R.P. Witt, and still is. In 2017, the pastel-hued 235-room hotel completed its makeover along the Indian Creek Canal on Collins Avenue—that scenic stretch ending at Ocean Drive and entering the bacchanalian “scene.”

Courtesy The Gates Hotel South Beach

Collins has always been more about taking it easy, rolling like the waves. Leave The Gates on one of the hotel’s bicycle cruisers and you can end up having café Cubano and black beans with yellow rice and Cuban toast in a Little Havana diner, or heading over to the Art District hub Wynwood and checking out the amazing hand-painted billboards and estimable galleries that take center stage come Art Basel. Ditto, go swanky nightclubbing or to a colorful dive bar.

Courtesy The Gates Hotel South Beach

Of course, you don’t have to leave the property. K’Alma Spa offers massages and wellness treatments in-room or on the hotel’s third-floor Plunge Deck. The expansive first-floor deck overlooks the hotel’s pool and the Collins Waterway with custom double-sided cabanas. Steps from the hotel are cultural destinations such as Lincoln Road, the Wolfsonian, the Perez, and the Bass museums; the Miami Beach Convention Center and the area’s finest shopping and dining venues.

Courtesy The Gates Hotel South Beach

The Gates itself is noted for OLA, its Latin America-inspired restaurant, where chefs Christopher Camacho and Carlos Castro and their team offer everything from specialty mojitos to their famously fresh ceviches, with a picturesque poolside patio to enjoy them on. If you’re a tequila man or woman, its bar offers dozens of options, as well as mezcals.

Courtesy The Gates Hotel South Beach

Throughout its public spaces and suites The Gates has curated a vast collection that mirrors the natural colors and vibrancy of South Florida. That includes the work of renowned beach and seascape photographer Jorge De La Torriente, like Pink Umbrellas pictured here. Custom images curated by the hotel’s design team anchor the double-height wall in lobby, providing a mini pop-up gallery experience.

Courtesy The Gates Hotel South Beach

The Gates South Beach is part of The Gates Gallery of Hotels, an up-and-coming collection of artfully designed properties with locations in Key West, Barcelona, and San Francisco. The portfolio is managed  by Highgate, a premier real estate investment and hospitality management company  with headquarters in New York and Dallas. Its portfolio includes more than 100 properties in gateway cities worldwide. In 2016 The Gates was added to the Hilton portfolio as well.
